I stared down at the floor, four stories beneath me. The musty smell of the old, Victorian house was overwhelming, and I was standing on a pretty stable part of the floor, though it still squeaked when I walked around. The stone that created the house was worn, and cobwebs made the edges of the walls and roof completely white. At every turn, one could see bugs scuttling around the walls and floor, taking advantage of the unkempt shelter. Here, there was no one to spray pesticide, no one to destroy the webs that the spiders worked hard to spin, no one putting out traps that will snap upon contact. It was a haven for them, and, despite the dusty conditions, a haven for me as well.
I watched as a spider spun her silver web, spiraling round and round on the bases she had made. It was almost invisible, only to be seen when light was at the right angle. I wished her luck in catching her food, before turning my back to the window, and leaning against it, though being careful not to touch the web. She’d worked hard on it; I wouldn’t do something like that. Not on purpose, at least. It’s not like it would benefit me in any way.
I felt some of the stone crack behind me, moving outwards a little. I turned around in alarm. The house had been stable before, but I’d heard of a few people committing suicide off the window, never to be seen again, their bodies never found. Though it made me a little curious, I wasn’t just about ready to die now. I still had a life ahead of me. I inspected the cracked stone; the movement had made the web somewhat messy, though still intact and elegant.
I heard some voices yelling from outside. What was going on? I leaned out the window, still careful not to ruin the web that covered the top right corner, to see a group of high school kids, I recognized my high school uniform, and even one or two people from seeing them in the hallways. What were they doing? Their voices were angry. Was there some sort of conflict going on between the students of two schools? I squinted my eyes to see that the other people were wearing the uniform of a school for gifted or rich kids nearby. Why were they here, in this poor, old district?
Cr-crack
Was that a crack? I couldn’t really hear it, since one of the people out there yelled something really loudly. One kid punched another. Was a fight going to break out? Maybe I should call the police, but would they get there in time? Good thing, after that, no one else did anything violent. They lowered their voices, I could barely hear them now. By their posture, and what facial expressions I could see from that distance, I could tell the rich guys were looking down on the guys from my school, while the people from my school were looking at them defiantly.
Cr-CRACK
The wall gave way beneath me, and I turned around in alarm, reaching for the wall, the window pane, anything that I could get a grip on. What I got was a hand covered in spider webbing. I thought a quick apology in my mind, before lifting my head to look at the ground. The fall was four stories. There wasn’t any point in screaming. I looked back at the sky one more time, closing my eyes and preparing for the impact.
Five, four, three, two, one…
I didn’t feel myself hit the floor.
I opened my eyes again to find myself surrounded with darkness. Was I dead already? That was pretty painless. I wasn’t really falling anymore; the wind moving upwards was slow. I was floating downwards, slowly, steadily. Finally, I hit the floor. I felt my neck. There was still a heartbeat. How was this possible? Not just the fact of my being alive, but for a place like this to exist? I looked around to survey my surroundings. Everything was still completely dark, but the floor was luminescent enough to reveal a checkered pattern, much like a chess board.
In front of me, I saw five glass bottles, about half of the size of a normal water bottle. I sat down to inspect them. One of them had some sort of red liquid inside and had a heart shape on the cap. Two of them had black liquid inside, one had an upside-down heart on it, while the other had a clover. One of the bottles had a swirl of red and black inside it, I was surprised that the colors didn’t blend completely, even after I shook it around. The last one was clear. If it weren’t for the small line where water and air separated, I wouldn’t have known there was anything inside it at all.
In front of the bottles, there was a sign that said, “drink one.” Logically thinking, the sign probably depicted the opposite of what I really should do, if I wanted something good for me. Then again, there wasn’t exactly anything else to do, and the black and white checkered floor seemed to go on forever in every direction. It wouldn’t hurt to try, would it? I chose the clear liquid, uncapping it and letting the tasteless fluid flow into my mouth, swallowing.
Suddenly, the scenery around me spun, and the number of different colors increased. I was soon in a room with the walls almost completely hidden behind bookshelves and file cabinets. Half of the room was extremely neat, while the other half, though not completely messy, looked somewhat disheveled. Someone was sleeping on the desk, a pile of papers underneath him. He was cute-looking, somewhat like a little boy.
“Umm, excuse me?” I tapped him on the shoulder.
“AHH! I wasn’t asleep! Don’t kill me!” He jolted awake, looking around for the person who had woke him up, “Oh! A new person! We don’t get any outsiders here very often. The last one was…how many years ago? I don’t remember. Anyways, welcome! Uh…YESUNG!” He was wearing glasses, and had rabbit ears on the top of his head, which made him look absolutely adorable. His voice was high, though not girly, and very distinct.
“What?” A man I guessed was Yesung opened a door behind me and walked into the room, “ah, a newcomer? Why didn’t you say so? It’s a cute girl, too! Not like that last guy. He was so boring. Didn’t survive for very long, either. Anyways, welcome! I’m Yesung, and this is my partner, Ryeowook!” This guy had bunny ears and glasses, though his glasses were more rectangular.
“Umm…Hello? I’m Ryou,” I said, somewhat awkwardly.
“Oh! The report is coming in!” The first guy, Ryeowook, I think, caught a paper that had somehow appeared out of thin air, “Ah, you picked that role? That’s interesting, we haven’t had one of those for a while.”
“What?” The other guy, Yesung, looked over Ryeowook’s shoulder, “Oh, well then, you’ll definitely have a lot of freedom…”
“What?” I blinked cluelessly. What were they talking about now?
“We’ll explain in a second, after we’re done logging everything.” Ryeowook and Yesung then got to work writing, pulling out files and papers, and a lot of other things. It happened so quickly, I couldn’t keep track of all of their motions. Finally, they stopped.
“Anyways, Ryou, welcome to the Royal Flush!”
