Birthdays. The one day of the year that was just for you, never mind that at least a couple billion other people have the same one as you. Though having at least several millions of people celebrating your birthday would probably make you feel special. Unfortunately, not everyone had the honor of being cheered on by so many people. Yesung knew he was lucky, but it wasn’t just luck. It was work. For every fan screaming his name, for every dollar he earns, for every minute in that recording studio. It took work to be loved, but it was worth it.

Every year when he was young, a birthday was just a reminder of his failures, of a year passed without a debut, or, in his younger days, without passing an audition. Now, though, it was just a milestone of success. For another year that he survived in this market. Another year with his fourteen precious friends at Super Junior and the numerous others from the company and other companies as well. All of his hard work had paid off, and now he could spend his birthday looking at all of his accomplishments this year and celebrating it. Well in whatever time he would have.

“Are you ready, Yesung?” Ryeowook poked her head into their room, blinking. “We have to go soon. Recording the songs and doing the photo shoot today.”

Recording. What a great way to spend his birthday. Doing the thing he loved most for the people who loved him most. Today was going to be great. He just knew it.

And maybe, just like every other year…

Nah. Shouldn’t get hopeful.

Kibum adjusted the collar of his suit, admiring himself in the mirror. Perfect. Today was going to be perfect. Everything was going to go according to plan. It wouldn’t for anyone else, but he was Kibum. The world gravitated around him.

Or so he tells himself.

It’s quite difficult for a whole world to gravitate around one person.

Every year, he took one day off from his acting to celebrate the birthday of his best friend. It wasn’t any secret how close Yesung and Kibum were. Sure, they weren’t as much of a ‘couple’ as ‘Yewook’ and ‘Kihae,’ but he preferred not to skinship too much. He didn’t exactly appreciate everyone else skin shipping with Yesung, either, but there wasn’t much he could do about it. Promotions, he supposed. Whatever the fans want, they get. Well, except spending a day with a favorite member or something ridiculous like that.

Anyways, that wasn’t the point. Today was the day, and it was going to be great. He’d found a perfect, quiet, and peaceful place to spend the evening, not the mention the gifts. He’d even baked a cake by himself and spent quite a long time decorating it perfectly. The flowers perched prettily on the cake, perfect swirls and petals without a single mistake. It had taken him forever, not to mention all of the artistic talent he could muster.

Perfection.

Time permitting.

Of course. The photo shoot would run overtime.

Really, did the photographer have to be so picky? It was just a photo shoot for their fifth album, after all. No big deal. The fans didn’t really care how well they posed so long as they looked good. And healthy. Fans were actually quite concerned about their physical health. Kibum was watching on the sidelines as his band mates took photos and admiring a certain person’s bone structure -

Oh, wait. Focus.

Kibum turned to one of the managers, “How long until this shoot is over again?”

The manager raised a defined eyebrow, “Kibum, you’ve asked the same question millions of times. Is there something special today or something? I know you want to participate, but we don’t want to raise any false hopes.”

“Something special? Of course there’s something special! It’s - “ Kibum stopped himself, “Oh, nothing, never mind. I just want to…spend some time with my hyungs while I have the time to. You know, catching up and all.” He smiled wistfully, “I really miss everyone. The stage, too. Even if I feel more comfortable at the sets.”

“Ah, Kibum. You’re such a flip-flop,” the manager giggled as she made a mark on her files.

“Uh. Right. Sure.” Kibum leaned back and went back to watching his friends taking pictures. They had finished all of the solo pictures first, so the group pictures should be the last thing before they could go. Twenty minutes overtime. Not bad, he supposed, but twenty minutes was definitely going to encroach on his precious time with -

Okay, just stop thinking.

Kibum turned on his iPod and placed his earphones in his ears, switching to a certain song (It shouldn’t be too difficult to guess what it was) and closing his eyes. A small smile formed on his lips as he admired that beautiful, husky voice and the perfect pitch of each note he belted. Beautiful. Perfect. However he looked at it, Kibum knew Yesung was the epitome of perfection. Perfect personality, talent, physical appearance - Okay, so perfection was in the eyes of the beholder, but Kibum knew just what he wanted.

So who cared if they were both guys? Perfection had no boundaries. Love had no boundaries. He would be able to protect Yesung from being tainted by the outside world -

Oh, so the world was his enemy now? Great. Leave it to his mind to make it like that.

Well, there was one thing that was definite - Yesung was precious, and Kibum wasn’t going to let him be stolen by anyone else. Anyone. No one was more suited for the job than Kibum.

“Kibum? Kibum? Are you asleep?” Kibum opened his eyes slowly to see Donghae’s curious face, “Kibum! You should know better than to sleep out in the open like this!” Donghae was obviously trying to stop himself from laughing.

Alarmed, Kibum sat up and looked around, “What? What happened?” He paused, “Did someone draw on my face? Oh, they are so - “ Before he finished, he dashed off to the men’s restroom, doing his best to ignore the smirks and giggles along the way. Almost crashing through the door, Kibum stopped suddenly, eyes widening in horror.

“Ah, Kibum - “ That perfect face turned around, his beautiful lips curling into a smile as the melodious tinkling sound that was his laughter resounded through the room -

Kibum shook his head. Now was not the time to be obsessing.

“Yeah…I’m never going to fall asleep like that again…excuse me,” Kibum walked over to the sink and washed the ridiculous markings someone made off of his face. As he washed his face off, he glanced at the mirror in front of him for a slight moment to see what seemed like Yesung blushing and looking away.

Nah, must have imagined it…

As Kibum washed the last black mark off of his face, he looked down at his suit to find most of the collar and part of his shoulders wet. Great. That definitely made him look presentable. Turning back to his friend, Kibum asked, “So, Yesung, are you busy for the rest of the evening?”

Yesung blinked and shook his head, “Nope. Nothing planned.”

Kibum grinned, “Then, would you like to spend the rest of the night with me?”

“Eh?” Yesung tilted his head, and maybe - just maybe - a glint of happiness appeared in his eyes, “Sure! But wouldn’t you want to spend more time with everyone else, too?”

Kibum smiled a bit flirtatiously, “I’d much rather spend more time with you.”

“Hey, don’t say things like that!” Yesung blushed. Kibum laughed and walked out of the bathroom, taking Yesung’s arm on the way out.

“Did you like it?” Kibum asked. They had stopped near a pond, reflecting all of the stars of the night sky, whose beauty was, in Kibum’s opinion, still no match for Yesung’s magnificence.

Hm. I think I’ve just about used every positive adjective in the dictionary…

“Yeah, of course,” Yesung cautiously placed his head on Kibum’s shoulder. Kibum kept himself from jumping in pleasant surprise, closing his eyes for a moment and letting Yesung’s scent waft around him.

So gor -

Okay, no. No blanking out now.

Kibum nudged his hyung lightly. “Yesung?”

“Hmm?”

“Ah, sorry,” Kibum thought for a moment, trying to think of a way to word this so he didn’t sound rude, “Could you, uh, get off my shoulder for a moment?”

“Oh! I’m sorry! Am I a burden?” Yesung sat back up with a jolt, looking away at the bushes shyly.

Kibum shook his head, “No, it’s not that, it’s - “

“Um, Kibum?”

Kibum blinked, “What?”

“I had something I wanted to say…” Yesung shuffled his feet nervously.

“Hm? What is it?” Kibum blinked curiously. Okay, so he was just about to confess, but it was alright if it was for Yesung, right?

“Kibum, I - I…” his small hands moved up to cover his face as he looked down again. It was too dark for Kibum to tell if he was blushing, but he could practically feel the waves of heat from Yesung’s body, “I like you!”

Kibum stared at Yesung for a moment. This was supposed to be his confession date, not Yesung’s! Well, then, at least he knew he wouldn’t be rejected, but…so much for everything going as he planned.

Yesung watched Kibum, who had remained silent in his thoughts, for a moment, before adding, “I - I’m sorry, I know it’s sudden and we’re both guys and all, but…I just wanted to get this out of my mind. It’s okay, I expected you to reject me, anyways - “

“What? Reject you?” Kibum blinked. “Never! I mean…” He stood up, walked in front of Yesung, and kneeled down in front of his hyung and taking his hand. “Yesung. Jongwoon. I love you,” he looked up and smiled at Yesung’s surprised face, “Will you do me the honor of…being my boyfriend?”

“Kibum…” Yesung’s face broke into a tearful smile as he threw his arms around Kibum, resting his head on the younger’s broad shoulders.

Kibum grinned and pulled Yesung into his arms, closing his eyes and inhaling Yesung’s scent. After a long moment, Kibum pulled away. “Yesung. I have something for you, hold on.” He stood up and looked behind the bushes, where he had carefully hidden something…

Ah. Found it.

Kibum pulled a bouquet of white roses from the hiding spot, looking through them once more to make sure each was arranged in its precise location before bringing it out to Yesung.

“Happy birthday, hyung,” Kibum held the bouquet out as Yesung took it into his hands, taking a slow sniff.

“Wow. It’s…perfect.” Yesung grinned, “Curious color choice, though.”

“What?”

“People who like white roses are masochists. Didn’t you know?”

This time, it was Kibum’s turn to blush.
