[ She inclines her head slightly forward and checks it as quickly as ever, dark eyes keen and concerned as she looks him over as best she can given what is available for her to see on the screen of her communicator. She knows better than to think his first few statements innocent, after all, and her mind is running in a thousand different directions trying to place what pieces of the puzzle she does have, but the fact of the matter is that she hasn't been around him nearly enough lately to have all or even very many of them and it frustrates her; though, she's careful to keep as much from her face, her concern apparent nonetheless. ]
What happened? [ And she is as quick as ever to cut straight to the chase, his well-being taking precedence. He is, after all, her partner and a dear friend. ]

[A smile, genuinely pleased - warmth in his voice when he greets her, too - but not without a bit of calculation. He studies her a moment, the expression turning rueful, before, tone smoothing into something serious, he replies, equally to the point.]
