I think this snippet of my commentary while watching sums up my feelings quite nicely:

And Takumi did the same when Yuji was full of so much hate toward the universe and attacked him. But Takumi knew that deep down, Yuji was still his FRIEND. Still tried to save his life by putting him through painful experiments that MIGHT have extended his life because he was dying. And you know what? You know what Takumi said when Yuji asked why he didn't kill him?
"Because you're still human."
