Good way to bridge the gap between Old School and New. This is really a fulfillment of Eight's role in canon as that bridge, and it perfectly manages to justify the difference between the pacifist Doctors of yesteryear and the warrior Doctors of today.

Now, it will be up to Twelve to decide if he will stand for peace or stand and fight.

Also, technically, Nine is the First. He's the first Post-War Doctor, the PTSD Doctor.
