Hi! I just joined this community and thought I could write a line to greet other members and share my appreciation for Akira Kurosawa. So many other great films, I think the one you should see next in line is the obvious answer Rashomon or maybe Ikiru, which is one of the most beautiful films ever made.

I second the above recommendation for Ikiru. It has some of the most sublime scenes in all of cineam.

Ran is my favorite 'epic' samurai film... I dig Rashomon a lot. Yojimbo and Sanjuro are both great if you really love Toshiro Mifune (and who doesn't?).

I'd have to say my favorites are, right now, Ikiru and Stray Dog. Neither happen to be samurai flicks.

Actually, really, pretty much any movie up to Red Beard is ace. I've seen all his 50's/60's work back to Stray Dog (not yet seen The Idiot or Scandal), and its virtually all genius. The only ones I don't *love* are I Live In Fear, The Bad Sleep Well, and Throne of Blood.

After Red Beard things, be careful. I found Dodeskaden boring. Dersu Uzala is beautiful, but obtuse and slow (it really resembles Werner Herzog more than Kurosawa). Very unlike his other stuff.
