i got yojimbo and sanjuro today! wooohhooooo!!! btw---i'm doing the paper on the lighting of rashomon and dreams; some interesting things are coming out. maybe i'll talk about it later....
Heh, I have them all except "The Bad Sleep Well", which just came out and "The Lower Depths" which is paired up with the French version of the film. I also have Dersu Uzala, Dreams, RHapsody in August and Madadayo. *blush* I'm a rather big Kurosawa fan. ;)
I used to make a point of getting them all, but a spate of unemployment a few years ago made me really reliant on the Phoenix Public Library. Since, then, I've been able to check out quite a few.
However, reading recent posts to this board have made me realize that I want them right now! Especially the whole version of Kagemusha, with Takashi Shimura.
Back when I first started getting into Kurosawa and Japanese film, DVD was in its infancy and sometimes the best I could find were laserdiscs! The first time I saw Yojimbo was at the laserdisc player in the college library with headphones. Since the rise of DVDs, I've noticed there are a lot more Japanese titles... though Criterion just started with Mizoguchi now.
I still wouldn't mind seeing Drunken Angel come to Criterion, though I have on VHS.
I'm going to wax nostalgic about this... but so far as I know, didn't Drunken Angel come out in 2000? I got it around Christmas time. Shortly after that I got a DVD player and decided I wasn't getting VHS anymore, so that precluded Scandal and Record of a Living Being.
For the record, I have on DVD: Rashomon, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, High and Low, Red Beard.
On VHS: Sanshiro Sugata, No Regrets For Our Youth, One Wonderful Sunday, Drunken Angel, Stray Dog, Ikiru, Seven Samurai, The Lower Depths, The Hidden Fortress, The Bad Sleep Well, Red Beard.
This includes the "cursed" copy of Ikiru. When Kurosawa died, an old friend called to tell me the news. I popped in my copy of Ikiru, which wasn't even that old, and the tape jammed! I still had the receipt, so I went to get it replaced, citing it as a defective copy. I think the other tape also acted squirrely.
Looking through the tapes, I realize I have no idea where One Wonderful Sunday is... I'll have to track it down now.
