chapter 1 Bettina sobbed as Alfred waved goodbye and went on with his quest to find his brother. As a mother, she can never afford seeing him off, worrying that he might not return and be on the same fate as her older.
Alfred didn't carry guards or horses. All he had was a bag full of gold -hoping it won't be stolen- and his clothes. But before he could leave, a problem immediately arose. Where should he start?
~||O||~Arthur sighed upon seeing himself marching down the aisle of the church, Sylvette, the largest church in the whole country where royal weddings were always held. Anyway, he felt like pitying himself more when he saw his mother Elizabeth crying and his brothers comforting her.
How did it end up again? Well, Arthur believed that marriage is a contract between lovers who are ready to enter a forever life together, not by political means. The Kirkland family was the most influential dukedom in the whole country, besides, of course, the monarchy. Ever since the Jones' reign, they've been loyal to the family, serving as their guard dogs. But they refused any forms of marriage between two families, especially now that the current monarch had to search for their future queen. They did their best in offering the Kirkland a position to the castle, but only ended up in failure. And now, the Kirkland had to finish this matrimony after an accidental commitment with the Meyer's only daughter, Amelia.
The groom didn't really know why he was the chosen guy instead of the oldest, Smith. But what can he do? Based on traditions, it's said that if you have a high position, the youngest of the family shall be married to another if they want to continue to have endless power.
As Amelia reached him, Arthur faked a smile and went up in the altar where forever would be doomed.
The ceremony went smoothly with all the chords choking them up, laces entwined to their fingers, droplets of blood were shed in grails and the part where Arthur had anticipated the most. Saying their wedding rites to end this all. With a deep breath, he turned to look to his family, muttering apologies before started running down the long aisle of Sylvette.
"Arthur!"
"Bastard, what do you think are you doing?"
He frowned as two guards blocked the double wooden doors. He should've done this before even starting. If he did, he won't lose even just a drop of his own blood! Well, he could've just cancelled this all, fake that he caught an incurable disease, but that would make the situation complicated. Anyway, this scenario was expected since he was always forced to watch plays with his mother…about a girl who never wants to be married by some stupid, rich guy. And now, he was the girl and Amelia was the guy. Ironic.
"Where do you think you're going, Sir Kirkland?" One of them asked, pointing his lance at the blond, to which he wasn't threatened. In fact, Arthur found this derisory!
"Oh dear, whatever shall I do?" He sighed in sheer sarcasm, waving his hands as though surrendering. And at the same time, Arthur snapped his fingers as bright light emanated throughout the cathedral. The light was blinding and no one can make such if not a professional magician. "Cheerio!" He shouted before passing through the temporarily blinded guards and out of Sylvette.
Spades had been notoriously known to not have such things called 'alleys' nor any good hiding place. That was the first and foremost reason why criminals don't exist. But in Arthur's case, he had to find a good hide out or this cat-and-mouse chase would end and he'll be eternally damned with Amelia.
~||O||~Alfred sat on the rim of the water fountain, staring at the ground blankly as he petted an albino rabbit, something he found along the way. "I really fail as a younger brother." He sighed but the rabbit shook its head.
"No, you don't! You've only started with your journey, so it's okay if you can't spot your brother yet."
Once again, the blond prince sighed. The rabbit was right. But then, in a short span of 2 hours, he already visited 19 towns out of 20. The last was Leverru, the place where most royalties were found. It's considered the heart of Spades since it's said that Leverru was the most modernized. And it's also the biggest among them all. So, how was he to find his brother here?
Just as he was busy pitying himself, a blond kid would bushy brows frolicked through the busy town of Leverru. Alfred muttered something out of earshot, something like 'brother'. Well, so much for height change, he was too dense to even know it. There might be other people with such attributes, considering this country was huge. But as he placed a hand on the kid's shoulder, the boy tensed immediately.
"Hey, don't touch my apprentice!"
Alfred gasped at the frightening, hoarse voice whilst letting go of the unknown boy. The boy ran towards the man, shivering.
"Did that ass hurt you, Peter?" The man with glinting red eyes asked as he lifted Peter in the air and carried him on his shoulders. Peter shook his head and beamed.
"I'm okay, desu yo~!"
Alfred heard the rabbit giggle and shot it an icy stare.
"Well, kid," The man started as he paced near the prince. "Good luck with your journey."
Alfred nodded, turning his back before noticing something. "Wait, how-," but the mysterious people vanished. Weird, Alfred remarked as he turned back…only to stumble backwards. "Ow, dude, what the hell was that for?" He groaned, opening his eyes to see a panting blond on top of him.
"Please hide me." Another strange man pleaded, hands tightly clutched on Alfred's collar. When he made no move, the man scoffed. "If you want my bloody arse to be caught by stupid lancers, I swear to the great king to put a curse on you…whoever you are. So, please! I think it's best to hide me."
Alfred could only nod loosely, pushing the stranger off. Standing up, he grabbed his wrist -thinking it would be awkward to hold hands- and headed towards the forest. As they hid behind the largest tree, Alfred spared him a glance. "Who are you, by the way?"
"Arthur." The man replied, but something made him stop. "Wait, I shouldn't give you my name! Ugh, bollocks!"
Alfred chuckled as he ushered Arthur to stand up. "It's not like I'm gonna do something bad to you!" At by the time he said that, Arthur's face turned red. "D-don't think stuffs about that! I mean, robbing or what! Plus, I'm not gay. Jeez!" He sighed, holding his hand up for a handshake. "I'm Alfred, by the way."
Arthur took his hand and shook it lightly. "Pleasure to meet you, then."
"Now that we know each other, why don't you tell me the reason for the run-in?" He asked as he quirked a brow.
Arthur withdrew his hand from the stranger while giving his a glare. "We might know single information about each other, but I think that won't count to make us…au fait to each other, don't you think?"
"Then why did you ask for my help, then?"
"I have to run away from a wedding or else I'll be forced to marry their stupid heiress." He replied. A brief moment of silence enveloped the two before Alfred smirked while Arthur face-palmed. "I just said the reason, didn't I?"
Alfred didn't know he could do reverse psychology. In fact, he didn't know it at all! But he was grateful to have this moment to show his true nature of being smart, and hoped to have more moments.
"There he is, mate!"
Arthur froze before moving to another tree, farther from the first one.
"Hey, you there!" The larger of the two grabbed Alfred by the shoulder and threw him on the ground. "Where's the damn bloke you're with?"
Alfred coughed, rolling to his side and fixed his glasses. "What did I do wrong?"
The other knight nudged his companion's shoulder, gaping at the same time. "W-we're sorry, Prince Alfred."
"Yeah, yeah, if you don't mind you're disturbing my rest." The blond monarch rolled his eyes, dusting invisible dirt on his clothes.
"Y-your majesty, have you, by any chance, seen a man with thick brows? You know, Arthur Kirkland?"
"I have not seen anyone besides you."
And with that, the guards bowed their heads, apologizing for the disruption and left the forest. Alfred heaved a sigh. "You can come out now!"
Arthur got out of his hide out, playing with his cuffs with a faint blush dusting his cheeks. "You didn't tell me you're Prince Alfred Jones."
"Well, you didn't tell me you're Sir Arthur Kirkland. So, I think it'll make us equal." The prince smiled.
The latter nodded. And upon walking beside his new-found blond acquaintance, he cupped Alfred's visage and placed a light kiss on his lips. And as they pulled away, Alfred looked at him in utter disbelief.
"Hell, what was that for?" He glared daggers at Arthur whilst wiping his lips. "Are you gay or something?"
Arthur scoffed as he started leading the way out. "Did your mother not teach you about the customs of Spades that it is traditional for people, especially to royal families to kiss once befriending another?" He asked, an eye roll followed by. "And since we're both from the highest families, I see no harm to it." He seemed to be confused. A prince doesn't know his own rules?
"Should we find an inn?" Alfred fidgeted, hoping he could successfully change the subject.
"No."
"Then, how about join me finding my long-lost brother?" He nearly jumped to his feet, clasping their hands together. Arthur tried to inch away, only to find out it only tightened once attempted. There's something glimmering in his eyes that Arthur cannot pinpoint very well. Yearning, perhaps?
"I would only say yes when you let go of my hand."
Stupid proposition, but at least the pain subsided! With their new-found friendship, they never mentioned the kiss earlier. Well, the prince's first, to be precise.
