I am totally in the same boat as you, and I don't know what to recommend. I've been on for ~ 3 months and I'm still floundering. I equate the wall to your main LJ page. You can see what you have written, what people have commented on and what you have commented on and activity on your friend's page if you have commented on their wall.

The tabs at the very top are useful. The tab with your name is your wall. The tab marked "home" has activity for all of your friends.

Not idea what else to suggest to make it useful.

A Wall is a place for people to leave you stand-alone messages, but they're public for all to see.

When you go to your Home (where you are when you log in), you will see a feed of all of your friends' status updates (and you can update your own status) and what quizzes they've done, games they've played, wall messages they've left each other, etc.

Notes are like LJ; you can post blog entries and memes there, and then tag people to do it or read it if you want particular people to comment.

I'm happy to answer more specific questions; I seem to be getting fairly good at explaining these things for people! :)

They're totally different beasts, really. I have gotten tired of Facebook, as it's been overrun with "apps" to let people "hug" you, "throw sheep" at you, and a variety of other fictional nonsense. Argh!
But, it's handy for networking!
The Wall is where people can post messages to you publicly. If you want it to be private between you and the other person, don't put it on the Wall where anyone can see it! :)
I don't know how to explain it easily, but if you want me to sit down with you sometime and make Facebook happen, we could do that.

I just "ignore" all app requests and then use the "Hide this app" feature that was just added. Much cleaner now.

Yeppers, me too. Ignore and hide whatever you don't want to see. Also, if I have looked at an app, I go into applications/edit and delete the application's ability to see my information. I don't really care; my life is all pretty transparent at this point, I suppose. Still, I don't leave apps able to see my profile unless I really want to use them.

When I clicked on View comments initially:

Facebook doesn't look like LiveJournal. It doesn't make any sense to me. It's just a bunch of random information at this point. What's a "wall"? Can somebody give me a Facebook-to-LiveJournal translation?

Error running style: Died in S2::run_code running EntryPage::print(): Couldn't get db master at /home/lj/cgi-bin/LJ/User.pm line 3865.

Irony!

LiveJournal is an interface designed to help you share your thoughts with other people. Facebook is an interface designed to help that annoying person from high school find you.
