A very useful article. I would add that, when dealing with musicians of different skill levels, not everyone needs to play on every piece. Let the absolute novices focus on just one piece for the upcoming performance. That way you can also include some more challenging pieces and keep your more advanced performers from getting bored.
I also have a strong preference for Arianna arrangements over Phaedria. To my ear, Arianna's sound more like Renaissance music (and less like Classical music). YMMV.
Both Arianna and Phaedria arrangements have slipped out of vogue, perhaps because they're no longer the newest thing; but I think they're pretty solid.
For whatever reason, Avatar's arrangements are really popular in Calontir these days. Leaving aside any discussion of the relative merits of Avatar's work, it's an awkward situation: he wants to sell copies of his book, a position he's certainly entitled to, but that means he's the only arranger who hasn't simply released his work for free distribution in the SCA; it make it hard for people who don't own his book to practice for a ball.
