So I am slightly more than halfway through this National Not-Really-a-Novel Month, and slightly less than halfway to the 50,000 mark, word count-wise. I am having serious doubts right now as to whether I will make it, given that the remaining days of this month are pretty busy and my motivation level is... erratic ( Read more... )

It's amazing how much you can write in a year's time, say, if you just sit down and write most days. I go through weeks of not writing much but for work, but I frequently have a story going and 2-3 others percolating in my head, and if I sit down and write 500 words, 1,000 words, 2,000 words a few times a week, they're done in no time. Obviously novels take more dedication, but there's no rule that says you have to finish them in a specific amount of time. You just keep plugging away until you reach THE END. :)

Well, yeah, that's what I'm hoping.
I just read a Graham Green novel with a novelist as his main character, and he talks about writing strictly 500 words a day, and usually stopping immediately when he reaches his goal. But he says he can usually finish a novel in a year that way, even with revisions. That seems a bit hard to believe, but then Graham Green was pretty prolific, I think.
