Sherlock Holmes!

Saw it yesterday and it was a FINE way to spend the day. RDJ was awesome, Rachel McAdams was awesome AND adorable and Jude was awesome and his mustache should get a best supporting actor award because that was a well done mustache. I don't know, I thought it captured the feel of Sherlock Holmes, much more than a straight adaption would. Yes, this Holmes participates in underground boxing, picks locks and feeds the dog experimental compounds, but as a way of showing that he has aggression that he needs to get out somehow, that other people have to force him to see them as entities with rights equal to his own, and that (almost) anything is acceptable in the quest for his (Holmes') enlightenment, I thought it was very in keeping with the canon Holmes, who was a heroin addict, had no compunctions about blabbing a person's secrets/motivations to a roomful of interested parties (who were like as not the people the secret-keeper most wanted to make sure never ever knew) and would cheerfully ransack other peoples' lodgings for the answers he craved. In fact, I really liked this version for the fact that this Watson called him on what an antisocial sod he was rather than being an adoring cheering section. Well, it is sort of steampunkish--not true steampunk, but enough to make it "modern"--which isn't canonical, of course, but it's enjoyable. But like windtear said, it's Holmesian in feel, if not what we're used to with, say, Jeremy Brett. Holmes is an ass but he's all about using logic and recognizing small cues even in the face of what seems to be overwhelming evidence of the supernatural.
