Liz glanced at her watch again. 8:08pm. She was getting impatient. She had the play room all set up, toys selected and set out she was just awaiting Olivia’s arrival. The detective would have to learn to keep better time if they were going to continue with this arrangement. At 8:11pm there was a knock at her door. She opened it and stood in the doorway, glaring at her with a raised eyebrow. “You’re late.”
Olivia was preoccupied with putting her wallet back away after paying the cabbie and when she looked up she froze at the look on Liz’s face. “Errr…yeah…I…” Why the fuck was she late? Oh yeah, she was too busy knocking back beers with Elliot while he threw his own pity party about his family life. “I lost track of time.”
The judge didn’t say anything, but she stood back to allow Olivia entrance in to her home. She caught a whiff of beer on her breath as she passed and gripped her upper arm hard. “You’ve been drinking,” she said sharply, stopping her moving any further in to the brownstone.
“Only beer,” she replied, thinking nothing of it.
”Olivia, I made you aware of my rules before I brought you home the first time. No alcohol, no drugs - prescription or other, always be on time, and always do as you are told.” She moved her back to the front doorstep. “I will not tie you up when you have been drinking. It is not enjoyable for me, and it is not safe. Go home, Olivia, and if you want to come back I expect you to prove to me you understand the need for these rules, and you won’t break them again.”
Olivia looked up at her stunned. She knew the rules, but it was only a few beers, she wasn’t drunk. And she wasn’t even fifteen minutes late. She assumed the rules were just there for show, she never expected Liz to enforce them. She nodded dumbly and turned to head back down the stairs. She got halfway down and turned to apologise only to find a closed door. “Sorry…” she said with a shrug and then headed home.
