“Are you ready?”
Liz’s hands weren’t shaking, but weren’t quite smooth as she ran them over her brand new robes. She nodded once in the mirror, eyes locked on Casey’s who was standing behind her.
The redhead took a step closer and wrapped her arms around her partner’s waist, smiling with pride at her in the reflection. “You look…stunning.” Her hands covered Liz’s and she laced their fingers together, her thumb brushing the back of her palm to try and quell the almost unnoticeable tremor.
“Let’s go,” she said with smile. She had a hundred yards walk from where she stood to the main doors, and in that short space she needed to compose herself completely. She shifted out of Casey’s arms and made her way to the door, the cold metal of the handle helping to ground her.
”Last chance to back out,” Casey said softly. This was Liz’s big moment and she really didn’t want to take any of the limelight from her.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Casey,” she snapped back a little sharper than she intended. “I’m sorry,” she said almost immediately. “Come on. This is the biggest moment of my career so far. I want you there.”
Casey’s smile was bright and she moved next to her, hand reaching for her lovers. “Good.” They made their way down the corridor hand in hand, only letting go when they finally reached the end door. Liz pushed it open, the picture of confidence, and smiled at the small group of colleagues who had gathered to watch her swearing in.
Casey could tell they were wondering why she was here, but everyone was too polite to ask. She took her seat as Liz was ushered to the front and sat silently throughout the ceremony. Her eyes filled with proud tears - something she knew Liz would find over the top - and she smiled when her partner was finally sworn in as a judge.
When the formalities were over, Liz shook hands with everyone then made her way to Casey’s side. Their hands connected and Liz answered the silent question from Casey by kissing her softly. She was no longer her boss, they didn’t need to hide their relationship anymore.
”I should have known,” Lena Petrovsky said as she approached Liz to congratulate her. “She’s almost as stubborn as you are,” she said with a smirk. “Congratulations, Liz.” She gave her a kiss on the cheek then smiled at Casey. “I hope you realise this means you’ll be seeing a lot more of me…”
Casey was about to answer when she was interrupted by a less-than-subtle cough that could only belong to her boss. She turned and smiled confidently at Branch, even though she was feeling anything but. She knew the rumours about him, and she knew his conservative attitudes all too well. Liz had assured her she would be fine, so she had to trust her.
“I wasn’t expecting to see you here, Casey,” he said, his voice as gruff as always. “I’m sure you know what this means.”
Oh fuck…”What is that?” she asked politely.
“There is a clear conflict of interest…I’ll need you to stop by my office this afternoon. We will need to get the paper work put in as soon as possible.”
“Paperwork?” she asked, glancing at Liz who just smiled back at her.
“Yes, to make sure you don’t try any cases in front of Eliza…I’m sorry…Judge Donnelly,” he said with a nod towards Liz.
Casey breathed a silent sigh of relief and nodded. “Of course. I’ll be by after lunch. If you’ll excuse me, I have something that needs my urgent attention” she pulled out of any further need for conversation and squeezed Liz’s hand. “I’ll be in your chambers, Judge Donnelly,” she whispered so only Liz could hear. “Making sure the champagne doesn’t get warm.”
Casey said her goodbyes and slipped out of the room, only relaxing when she was alone in the hallway. They’d done it…and the world didn’t end. Not only did the world not end, she still had a job. She smiled even wider as the relief washed over her, then quickly hurried down to Liz’s brand new chambers to prepare the champagne.
Liz watched her go and smiled a little brighter, feeling ten feet tall in her new robes. It was the start of a new chapter in both their lives and she felt the same excitement she did her first day in law school. Knowing Casey was on the journey with her just made it all the more sweet.
