The Carol shot was definitely gratuitous but I did really enjoy the movie and especially all of the Kirk/Spock interaction.

I have no interest in Star Trek, but I thought I'd drop by to say that it isn't out in Japan until August 23rd. So yeah... over two months left to wait for Japan! It'll probably be in time for when you get here though, I guess. They usually screen movies with a choice of subs or dubs (although subs are distracting because you start reading them, then they don't match the dialogue and then you get confused. Or I do, anyway)
