You know, when reports started popping up in the Japanese press last week...

...about "unacceptable" and "racist" comments made to "university students" by a the Japan Bureau Chief that Okinawans were "masters of extortion (ゆすりの名人)," I said, "I bet that happened at the good ol' alma mater." Nailed it.

Although it did apparently take place in a class, and not the Washington Asia Forum as I'd guessed. I'm not surprised, because for some reason the Japanese students who attend this university have a serious bone to pick with how U.S.-Japan relations are (quite accurately, IMO) discussed by the faculty. To whit: one of my favorite professors was reprimanded for her "anti-Japanese bias." Or, in rational-speak, her willingness to point out how Japan's colonial past has continuing repercussions for its foreign relations in East and Southeast Asia.

I wonder what these activists made of another State Department official's statement at the WAF that Okinawan politicians need the Futenma base relocation controversy, because without it they'd get neither badly needed revenue nor the time of day from Tokyo.

That will be all.
