I think this study would be more convincing if it took place over a longer period of time. Of course the short term effects are easier to control... but if you are really going to give affirmations a go, you have to do it until you believe it. I have seen it work for people who were seriously down.
Does it work for everyone? Of course not. There is no cookie cutter for self-help. I would dismiss it like this researcher.
