So last night I got this e-mail from Shaw and I was like "Oh hell no". I urge everyone to read this, click the link at the end and act upon it now before we start getting taxed because broadcasters say they need our money so they can keep making terrible awful horrible shows like Corner Gas when really they don't even want that, they just want to ( Read more... )

That's not the point at all. The point is do you want to have more money coming off your paycheques each week that goes directly to the TV stations? I don't.

Or perhaps if we didn't force Canadian broadcasters to have to air x% Canadian content, most of which is pretty bad, they wouldn't be in a financial hole.

I do find it kind of funny that Shaw is crying about how they don't want to have to spend more money. I've been downloading shows off the internet and not feeling bad for it since I don't have $40/month to spend on basic cable. I have this odd feeling that Shaw isn't exactly on the verge of bankruptcy.

I'll drink to that first part. I think I've maybe watched between three and five Canadian shows with some kind of consistency in my entire lifetime. Are You Afraid of the Dark, that show with the kid with glasses that was originally on Are You Afraid of the Dark where he worked on a high school newspaper, and Trailer Park Boys.

I don't really think Shaw is exactly crying about spending more money though, like you said, they can afford it. They're just raising awareness for those of us who already do spend $40 for basic cable every month, a portion of which Shaw is paying out to these broadcasters already. We shouldn't have to pay more money for exactly the same broadcasting.

I was looking up some stuff on their site the other day and I could have sworn they threw in a bit about how much they already contribute to broadcasting funds, but I might be wrong.

You do have a point, though. Considering how expensive their services are already it's kind of a bad deal to be paying more for them.
