http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/car/240953927.html <-- What lake did this car get parked in? Seriously, a car should never have a need for a ECU (engine control unit, aka COMPUTER) to be replaced. That really bothers me.

I've been told that the ECU will sometimes get replaced during a transmission rebuild? or maybe I'm thinking of a tranny computer... Hmm... Regardless, I know we had to replace an ECU once because it randomly died on us. But that was a '95 Jeep which are horrific vehicles anyway.

That depends on the make and model of the car, but yes, it is true that ECU (engine control units) are replaced. In those cases, it should be labeled as a Drivetrain Control Unit. :P Makes life simpler.

ECUs tend to fail randomly, but in my eyes, there is always a cause. Replacing a car battery, jumpstarting, replacing the alternator, or anything else changes the dynamic of the power system can possible fry the ECU.

I've heard of an ECU going out just because someone fixed a blown fuse for something like a dome light or idiot light type of thing. Maybe the turn signal... But whatever it was, I think the guy must have cried for like an hour because to replace the ECU for his car would cost about 1 grand x.x;
