Shallow Characters

I've been reading Nora Robert's In Death series lately, and as they're progressing the character of Roarke is pissing me off more and more.  It's not just that he has no last name (or no first name), or even that he owns most of the known worlds and yet never has troubles being home for dinner or taking weeks off work - what's pissing me off is how ( Read more... )

How far into the series are you? I think Roarke will end up surprising you. The first few books are all about Eve. After they marry, her relationship with Summerset will bring out more of Roarke's past. While the series may not be for everyone, I have to admit it is the only long-running series that I still preorder and eagerly await.

And yeah. I've quit reading anything written by LKH. *gags with a spoon* If you look up "Mary Sue" in a Wikipedia, you will find Anita Blake and Merry Gentry in the explanation. Christine Feehan's "Dark" series pissed me off because all you had to do was change the names of the Carpathian male and his soul mate. Even the love scenes repeated book after book. Funny though, her Drake sisters and the Ghostwalkers series haven't quite gotten to that point yet.

And it's almost 1 a.m. and I'm rambling. Laterz gatorz.

I think that's the funny thing - I'm loving the series, and checking them all out from the library one at a time, currently up to ...Loyalty in Death? I'd have to check. And the thing is that I'm really liking them and they read fantastically fast and well - I just wish at this stage that Roarke was sometimes too busy to deal with Dallas, or that she had to tone down her temper to deal with his irrationalities sometimes. Or maybe I just wish he didn't own most of everything, although that is basically the underlying theme behind the series - untangling personal ethics, I mean.

I remember borrowing the Christine Feehan's off a friend of mine who loved them deeply *grins* They were good, but I've never been looking for the strong silent brooding type, so - not for me.

Oh, I just read a Merry Gentry book not long ago! She got pregnant! My jaw completely dropped. I thought the chances of that happening were nonexistent, honestly.

Roarke's and Eve's relationship gets more complex, trust me. :)

And thank the dogs! ...er...gods! Surely now that Merry has conceived, there's hope of a REAL plot - not just gratuitous sex scenes strung together dialogue. I managed to read the first four books, got Mistral's Kiss in hardback, read about fifteen pages and put it in the "Do Not Want" pile. Don't get me wrong, gratuitous sex is not in and of itself a bad thing but when the whole book is nothing but...I want a little more substance in the books I read.

And speaking of gratuitous, I'm back to writing. I'd like to finish up the chapters that lead to 'End of the Hunt' and then will send you the current stuffs. 'kay? *closes all windows but one* Catch you in a few!

Lol, the complete lack of plot was why I gave up after Mistral's Kiss, too - I didn't catch up with the latest one until it'd been out for over a year - I was on Amazon and wondering why A Lick Of Frost had got such high ratings compared to the last ones. Turns out it was cos something happened! Hallelujah.

Can't wait to see it! Have fun.
