Rodney walked very quickly down the hall towards John’s office Running was for emergencies only after all, not just being so excited he couldn’t even remember the scientific process and proper scientific procedure. The bright green of the shield on his chest made people take a second look, but not an obvious one. They had only been on Atlantis a week, but Rodney had already made people fear his rants.
“Major! Oh cool the doors open for me now. You’re not the only special one now.” Rodney took a moment to bask in the ability to open a door with his mind before turning back to John.
“Did you want something, McKay? I’m kind busy here.” John quickly brought up some inventory reports to hide his solitaire game on this tablet PC. “What’s with the shiny thing?”
“Thing? THING? THIS is an ancient shield. I’m invulnerable!” Rodney gestured at himself while literally bouncing with excitement. “It’s really quite ingenious. It acts like a protective skin and fully covers me…”
“Wait, so you mean you can’t be hurt by anything?” John sat up straighter looking much more interested. “Are there more?”
“Well, I’ve only found the one so far, but I’m sure there are more out there or I could reverse engineer this one… But! I wanted you to help me test it, Major!” Rodney rambled before getting back on topic.
“Okay.” John crumpled up a piece of paper and threw it in Rodney’s direction. It bounced harmlessly off his chest with a green flash and fell on the floor.
“Oh come on! Paper balls don’t hurt anyone. Try something that’s actually dangerous!” Rodney crossed his arms over his chest with a huff that John wasn’t taking this seriously.
“All right, if you want me too. You can’t complain if it fails and this hurts.” John pulled out his sidearm with a boyish grin.
“Umm… maybe not that dangerous?” Rodney started to look nervous.
“I won’t hit anywhere vital.” John aimed for Rodney’s left thigh and pulled the trigger. Rodney braced for it to hurt, but felt nothing. He looked up when he heard John curse and jump.
“Did it work?” Rodney had closed his eyes rather than watching.
“Yes it did, McKay! It bounced right off you and ricocheted back at me. That’s really cool.” John was grinning like a loon. “You know what else would be cool? Remember those balconies that overlook the gate room? Want to fly?”
Rodney just looked at John and shared a grin before turning and running out the door with him. Who cared about not scaring the minions.
