The Golden Compass (warning: rant ahead)

Dec 14, 2007 13:10

Went to see The Golden Compass the other night. Already pre-warned by the mixed reviews and Empire having hailed it as "Christmas's biggest disappointment" (2 stars), I went in with low expectations. Luckily, I ended up quite enjoying it; it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be, but then it wasn't great either ( Read more... )

I was disappointed by the end too, until I realised that they might... just might be being clever with it.

You see it occurs to me that the other place that that sequence might be very powerful is when Lyra breaks and stops lying to Will about how wonderful Lord Asriel is and what happened to her last friend whic if i recall corrctly comes abut two thirs of the way through Subtle Knife.

Just a thought, a hope.

Oh dear. Oh dear especially about the soundtrack. If all else fails with a film at least an epic soundtrack will give me reason to stay in the cinema (actually it's often the reason I went in the first place). Oh dear. That is, I can see it could be enjoyable but still "oh dear". I sound like a broken record. Not long to wait until I can reply with proper comments!

I precisely agree, and have often gone to see a film solely based on the score! Knew you'd understand.

Ooh EPIC. Not seen Transformers- thought it looked a silly, boys only film but this score is amazing! *favourites*

I agree with most of what you say up there-- I didn't hate it at all, but whenever I try and take about it it's just a litany of complaints and whinging, which makes me sound like a purist (moi? say it isn't so!) but! I found that the film and its failings make so much more sense if you looked at it in the light of a film trying to negotiate between wanting to set up a sequel but knowing that it might never actually have one, and therefore attempting to be stand alone ( ... )

I did! Quite sad really but I think my actual words were: "eee Rad Cam!!" :P
Completely agree with everything you've just said. Stelmaria = ooo.

Oh, and very disappointed to hear about the soundtrack. You know I'm soundtrack ignorant, I just felt like something was missing-- and now that you've pointed it out it's so bloody obvious!
