the shadows are coming for us all

Did any other equally geeky fans find it hard not to think of LOTR/B5 during the last Doctor Who episode? :) And also, as globules mentioned, definite resonances of The Time Traveler's Wife.

I didn't think of LotR actually (or the other two because I don't know them), but now you mention it, you're right! I think that the worlds used were so different that it was hard to connect rather similar ideas.

In Babylon 5 the initial/main 'big bad' are the Shadows, who are alluded to throughout the entire first season, with tantalising glimpes here and there, but they remain in the...er, shadows until the second/third/fourth seasons where there's an epic thousand-year-in-the-making battle between the forces of darkness and the forces of light. So in the beginning of the show you get lots of characters wandering around saying really cryptic, doom-laden things like 'the shadows are coming,' 'beware of the shadows,' 'a great darkness is rising' etc and you're kind of sitting there going wtf?. It's quite heavily influenced by LOTR but also completely different because of the futuristic space setting. The Shadows in B5 kick a lot of ass. Fun stuff ( ... )

I have never watched Babylon 5 although I'd really like to get into it. I think I'd need to start at the beginning of the series though, I hear it's quite a complex storyline.
I didn't think of LOTR at all though.
