A Lost Friend?

I may have just lost one of my best friends over the dumbest fscking argument in the history of ever.

Crystal and I were making plans to get together tomorrow, and I suggested we meet at the mall near my place to have lunch and pick up some snacks (and because I wanted to stop at a store there to pick up some new nail polish, which I mentioned) ( Read more... )

Sounds like a classic case of depression-- the cycle of feeling bad about yourself and lashing out at other people out of helplessness. Possibly the best thing you can do for her (and by extension your mutual network of friends) is to make sure she has access to good counseling and an understanding that there is no shame in getting help.

It may feel weird when someone deliberately tries to hurt you to turn around and be nice to them, but that's the only way to break the cycle.

Thanks Jon - it didn't occur to me that she might be suffering from depression, but it definitely makes sense. Both of her parents have been struggling with it for years. I guess I've just gotten so used to her insisting she doesn't have it, that it doesn't occur to me as a possibility anymore. I'll talk to the rest of the group and see if we can come up with some ways to talk to her about getting help - she definitely isn't going to like the suggestion.
