Delinquency and the ineffectiveness of perceived authority

 I've been watching the London (now UK) riots with interest, not least because of where they started. Quick background story is that my grandfather is rumoured to have played for Tottenham Hotspurs.

In spite of some of the criticisms of the delays in responding to the riots, I have to say that I think the approach the police took recently was much better than that of 25 years ago.

25 years ago the riots would have been broken up with excessive force- sure, that may be considered good or bad. Of course, 25 years ago you'd have been as likely to see the original protest broken up in the same way.

I also think that the 'them and us' attitude has been slowly waning, and that mainly due to the police actually avoiding excessive violence as a first response to any gathering.
