I don't date, but if I did and something like that happened to me... well, regardless of whether or not I wanted to patch it up, I'd at least want a better explanation than that. "I just don't see it working out" seems a like a pretty obvious cop-out to me -- at the least, it begs the questions of "Why not?" and "What happened to change your mind?". Yes, pursuing it would probably stir up drama, but I certainly wouldn't want to leave something like that sitting out unanswered. (Even if there's a good explanation, I'd rather know what it is -- and aside from "it might stir up drama", what do you have to lose at this point from at least trying to get a better explanation about it?)
...Granted, I'm probably the last person who should be giving out advice on this kind of thing, but that's how I feel about it, at any rate. Good luck, Al, whatever you end up doing. :/
