Prompt: July 21 ~~~ Poem
Acquainted with the Night, by Robert Frost
I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.
I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.
I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,
But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
A luminary clock against the sky
Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.
Author's Note: A very beautiful poem; only problem - I could not completely understand it! ;( I had for example really no idea what "luminary clock" meant until I read a summary/analysis of the poem I found with google. Only Way to Destroy Me. And I am really curious about tomorrow's prompt, as it should be the first one to be more difficult. As if I needed more difficulties... ^^"

There were many nights when Holmes wandered through London’s streets.
When he was younger it was his way to memorize the city, walking through the streets in darkness when there were no people around. It was a comfort and pleasure; the silence and solitude were his companions.
Now he wanders the streets in the night mostly to gather information or to be alone. At the moment the latter is the case.
He walks so far into the deepest corners of the city until almost no city lights illuminate the streets. Only darkness and coldness greet him in these parts of London.
Holmes does not care where exactly his feet lead, as long as they lead him away.
But even so far away he is still recognized by a bobby he meets around the corner. He does not know his name, but the bobby dips his hat and there is pity in his eyes.
Holmes averts his eyes and disappears in the next alleyway. Not far away enough…
In the back of his mind a voice whispers for a moment; a familiar and warm voice, but it is too silent for Holmes to understand what it says. Remembering that the owner of the voice is not there - is away - Holmes stops his feet.
He looks up to the sky and sees the full moon shining between the stars. The moon is like a silent clock, telling him how long ago the first snow fell.
It was the night of a new moon when Watson disappeared.
It was a dark, silent and cold night when he lost his friend. Where he once felt at home resided now the predator which took its prey away without a trace.
Holmes was acquainted with the night once, until a special man entered his life and gave him the warmth of the sun.
He hopes he will find his Watson soon; he longs to have the day back.
The night is too silent and lonely now.
