Don't worry, I'll never let myself be the other guy!

Being 'the other guy' often ends up sucking, don't let it bother you :)

tell her straight out. if she didnt know she was doing it to you, then she needs a light slap upside the head. if she DID know she was doing it, then probably, she isn't as All That as you think she is (woah am i so 1997 or what?). she'll just do it to you from the other way around in the future, and won't that be delightful!

Aye, and there's the rub: I'm not sure if she's doing it deliberately or subconsciously. Obviously, I hope it's not this really calculated approach, but she's also a very intelligent individual, so I have to think at least part of her knows what she's doing. But maybe that's just me being cynical.

I have noticed that some girls like to keep a "backup guy" handy, especially when their current relationship is going sour. I suck at relating to females and understanding them.

Yes! I know I do. I don't mean to do it at first but then it happens and i'm all "goddamn i hate myself" about it. and since i'm evil, i am warning you against involving yourself with someone similarly evil.

No need to tell her right now. The fact that you're not jumping face first into her crotch let's her know you're not trying to be that 'other guy'.

Also, if they do break up and she makes a move on you, explain that you'd be happy to date her, but some respectiable waiting time, like a month or two, should be observed out of respect for YOUR friend.

This sounds pretty reasonable, and I think it's probably the best way to go. Thanks, B.
