Interestingly enough I know several furries who work for 23andme. I get the impression that they feel (earnestly) that their company does the right thing with regards to ethics and privacy, but it's certainly a challenging topic. The fact that sharing your DNA also effectively shares that of your close relatives makes things particularly thorny.
Ethics? LOL! there isn't a quaint thing such as ethics anymore. It's monetarization that the modern world cares about. Ethics pfffft! Ethics is gone the way of the dodo bird. And, indeed! I heard about criminals being caught with the DNA from distant family members of the perpetrator.
But what you mentioned is so true, that sharing your DNA also shares almost everything about you and to some extent that of people you know. Sort of the facebook stuff. I will do a DNA test when they sell $99 dollar home DNA sequencer that you can buy and do that in the privacy of your own home. LOL! yeah, that will come in about 200 years after I die.
Yeah, I'm seeing the advantages of being a Luddite when it comes to new technology. I'm seriously worried about us becoming more and more of a police state. The less "The System" knows about me...the better.

I mean, I didn't know too much about my family history so curiousity got the better of me there. DX
