I concur. Pretty movie, boring story, still a highly enjoyable movie. Not sure if I would have loved it as much if it weren't in 3D.

I've heard much the same as you say, that the visuals and action are, as to be expected from Cameron, top notch(or better) and the story & dialogue is unoriginal and even stupid at times. My uncle in particular referenced a line about "words weighing heavy on my heard" that sounds like teenager poetry.

The "going native" story, which has been kicking around since at least The Last of the Mohicans is often considered racist and offensive because the white man takes the best traits of the native tribe and then surpasses them. Sometimes it's just because he's so badass, and sometimes it's because he incorporates the knowledge of the white man into the tribes' own ways, but almost always he becomes a leader/savior/most-badass of the group. The implication is that noble or not, these "savages" at best have some good ideas to offer the white man, but by themselves they cannot hope to compete. They need the white savior because on their own they would be simply overrun. There is also the implication that it is a lack of such people ( ... )

I watched Avatar for the first time the other day, and your review is spot on. The word itself was breathtaking and unlike anything I've ever seen in a movie. But most of the characters were basically cookie cutouts of roles I've seen in other movies/stories.

Still a brilliant film.
