My idea, not Allinghams ;-)

I figured that grandma would never call him by his pseudonym, but didn't want to use his real name too often. And 'puffin' just struck me as being the right kind of affectionate term ...

Maybe an aftereffect of viewing too many TV scenes in which Peter Davison is wearing a tux ;-)
