I've begun dabbling with ciphers for Endgame PCs (much thanks to
hilariarex for getting me started). So far, these seem to be a good general guideline:
* Make sure everything is double-spaced and a decently large font.
* Make sure that you have a non-ciphered copy of the text on file!
* Check if the font has different punctuation and different capital letters vs. lower-case letters. Not necessarily bad, but good to know for the level of difficulty regarding the text.
* Know the time frame players have to work with. If it is time sensitive, make sure it's fairly doable in that time.
* Make sure the document isn't a 10-page treatise in a single code. Figuring out the cipher is fun, but translation can become busywork.
* There is a difference between ciphers and cryptography.
* Know the level of difficulty players enjoy and who actually enjoys them.
If you've had some experience with ciphers, either in creating or deciphering them, I'd love to have more insights on:
- What do you enjoy most about ciphers?
- What should be avoided for fear of causing pain and sorrow?
- Fun cipher trickery that you don't mind sharing?
- Cipher fonts! (Probably better in a separate e-mail.)
I'm a relative newbie when it comes to ciphers, so any help would be great.
