"SORPRESA!"

"Madre Mia!" Maya presses a hand to her chest in surprise as her daughter and friend clap and grin and then dart forward to take her hands. Gabriel stands by the table, hands curled around the back of a chair and pulls it out for her with a smile.

"Happy birthday." A cake, drinks and some snacks in bowls are placed on the table and she stares open mouthed as she's shepherded into the chair. He bends down to whisper into her ear, his voice soft, "I have a gift for you, I'll give it to you later." She stares up at him and he quickly kisses her forehead and moves away before she can jerk back. Smoothing her hair back she looks towards her friend and Nadia and shakes her head with a wavering, grateful smile.

"You shouldn't have done this, I -"

"No we should have! You never celebrate your birthday mama. Me and Meredith baked you a cake!" Nadia comes forward and jumps into her lap and Maya puts her arms around her, feeling strangely helpless but doesn't want to ruin their gift to her.

"Thank you, I love it." They take a seat, Nadia sliding off to sit in her chair and start eating, leaving Maya to talk to Meredith while Gabriel and Nadia flick bits of rice at each other across the table. Maya clucks her tongue and frowns at them. "My lovely rice!"

Nadia giggles and tilts her head, grain of rice in her hand ready to fire. "It's ok, she's like a two." She throws it at her dad and he ducks and laughs, staring mischievously at Maya.

"Yeah, definitely..." they laugh at Maya's puzzled face and she pouts at them.

"A two? What are you both talking about!?"

Nadia giggles and cringes. "The Mad Mommy Meter! One is ok, ten is hide and nail down the shutters!" She laughs hysterically as Maya's eyes widen in outrage and then joins in with them, embarrassed.

"Caradura!" She shakes her head, smiling and leaves them to their rice war over the table.

"See? Wasn't the end of the world was it?" Meredith says and then they both freeze, staring at each other before bursting out in laughter. After what everyone had survived a nihilistic sense of humour seemed stamped on everyone. Still chuckling she watches as Gabriel stands and the light is turned off, plunging the kitchen into darkness until Meredith's fingers ignite and Gabriel takes pictures of them laughing as the candles are lit. Maya stares at them and counts the candles as they sing to her. As they do the smile on her face falls and she stares into the distance sadly.

"We would be thirty now, feliz cumpleaños..." The wick of each candle glows red and it shines in Maya's tear filling eyes and she sits back, all happiness drained out of her like it had never been. She never celebrates her birthday, it was too painful but she had hoped as the date approaches that it would get easier, that maybe one day she could celebrate a day just for her. But it had always been a joint celebration and the reminder that it would never be again was soul crushing to her. She always misses her twin but sometimes it can choke her in its intensity. Biting the inside of cheek she wipes the back of her hands over her cheeks as they all stand in silence, watching her with uncomfortable gazes.

"Mom? What's wrong with mommy?" Nadia whispers and she sidles up to her dad, looking like she was also about to cry.

Hiding her face in her hands for a moment, trying to stop a sob from bursting through her lips, Maya gets to her feet, wobbling and Gabriel reaches out to steady her. But Maya leans back, snarling and spiked with hate, "¡No me toques!Abestiado!" Gabriel backs away, nostrils flared and stands beside Nadia, who looks devastated and confused. Maya tries to apologise but Nadia runs out and Gabriel follows after his daughter, not looking back at her. Maya can't stop herself from sobbing, finding it impossible to speak; more then that she can feel an overpowering need to scream her lungs out. She runs out of the room, leaving Meredith to stare after her.

She puffs her cheeks out, trying to calm down as the door bangs closed behind her. Tears grow cold on her skin as the wind blows against her and she lifts her head up to see clouds skidding across the night sky. Turning back she sees that the kitchen light is on and Gabriel is standing at the window watching her and she tears her gaze away with an effort. Biting her lip she walks towards the entrance to Primatech.

"Maya? What's the matter?" Meredith comes out, speaking gently and Maya turns with a watery smile.

"I'm so sorry, it's just birthdays...me and Alejandro would be thirty now and every time a year passes and he's not here with me...it - it's just hard. I - I miss him so much." Her mouth wobbles and fresh tears well up and she stares upwards as Meredith rubs her arm. He was still watching her from the window the grief bubbles into rage and she speaks through gritted teeth and finally tells something that's been a lonely weight for so long. "He was murdered by him."

"Wh - who?" She turns to where Maya is staring and just catches a glimpse of Gabriel before he moves away from the window. Meredith turns back quickly and stares at the Latina with confusion. "What?"

Maya sucks in her bottom lip and squeezes her eyes closed. "It was before the virus was released. Me and my brother, we saved him. I...loved Gabriel but my brother never trusted him, right from the beginning. He didn't approve." They move towards the low slung wall that surrounds Primatech and lean against it. Meredith is silent as Maya speaks but takes her hand and squeezes her fingers when she finds it difficult to speak. Maya inhales a deep breath and blows it out, "me and Gabriel, we were going to leave without my brother so - so he tried to stop Gabriel from taking me. He killed him." She whispers in a heart wrenching tone and her eyes spill over with scorching tears.

"My god Maya...I had no idea. I'm so sorry." She pulls her into a hug and Maya holds tight for a long time before she pulls back, sniffing. Meredith is still shocked. "God, why would he do that? Aside from being a crazy bastard."

"He told me that he lost control. He - he said that he couldn't stand it if I left him and he went crazy when he was threatened with it..." She gulps a tear filled breath and shudders.

Meredith looks back to where Maya lives and her gaze is fiery. "I always knew something was off about him, those first few years you know? I just put it down to what happened. But you always said he was crazy but I never thought... Jesus Christ why are you even here? Why haven't you left him?" She utters fiercely to her, and her balled fists flare up for a moment.

Maya scoffs, folding her arms over her chest. "I tried but he always finds me...I've lived with him for almost seven years, with our daughter and it is my life now. But I have to keep everything I know to myself and it's so hard sometimes. I hate that I make Nadia upset but she doesn't understand...and I don't want her to. She loves her dad and learning what he did, what I did would just..." She trails off, miserable and Meredith stands a little awkward, not knowing how to ease this for her.

"You should have told me this before Maya, you didn't have to keep it to yourself."

She lifts her head with a hard look. "No I did, I didn't want to make anyone feel like I do, have that knowledge. It would scare them and they don't deserve that...but it's been six, almost seven years and we're all still here, alive and that's because of him. If I thought he was still a threat I would have said something. He might be pretending with me, it's possible but I think he's changing, over the years..." she trials off, introspective and a heavy silence falls. Finally Maya draws herself back from her thoughts and smiles at Meredith. The Texan looks extremely troubled. "Hey, don't worry I'm ok. I'm persevering." She says with a small, mocking smile but Meredith looks at her with a strong look of admiration.

"I know you are. You know how when somethin soft goes through fire they break, burn or melt? Well sometimes they become hard, annealed." She says significantly and Maya can't look at her she's so touched but takes her hands instead, tears dripping onto her feet. Meredith sniffs, thinking back. "Remember the party during the summer? Everyman that came near you he looked like he wanted to beat the shit out of them. I just thought he was...well Christ I dunno anymore."

Maya sighs and, letting go of her hands, drags her fingers through her hair, nodding. "I know, he's so possessive...but he's not with me every minuet of the day." She whispers coyly and as she does a glittering excitement comes over her features and she bites her lip. Meredith narrows her eyes and then they widen as she catches on and grins, nodding her head in support.

"Good for you...well I better get back, it's late. Is - is it ok that he - he's alone with -" She stammers and Maya holds out her hand to stem her.

"He would never hurt her, that I trust." She says quietly but assured but Meredith still looks apprehensive. Maya gives her a hug goodbye and watches as she moves across the street to the apartment block. Maya stays outside, wanting some time to herself.

Volting over the low wooden gates Maya begins walking down the road, looking up at the hills around her. Primatech was nestled at the foot of some of the only hills in Odessa and she was thankful for some diversity in this flat landscape she lives in. Coming towards some of the first houses she slows to a stop and turns when she hears a truck in the distance and braces herself. But it wasn't Gabriel. It was him. Immediately she feels herself grow breathless, her heart racing as the van comes to a stop beside her and she leans down to look at him.

"Hi! What are -" He stops with a chocked gasp when she curls her fist around his T-shirt, tugs him forward and kisses him hard on the mouth. Lust and wild passion roars up in her, emotions and sensations she had been suppressing for too many years finally getting an outlet.

"It's my birthday today..." she says lightly under her breath and he smiles as she lets go of him.

He inhales deeply before speaking. "Happy birthday! Ge - get any good presents?"

Maya doesn't respond but smiles coyly. "You're going to the fields, aren't you?" She moves around the van and opens the passenger side door as he gawps at her before stammering. He was very red and judging from the bulge in his pants very turned on. The lust between them had been simmering for days.

"Ye-yeah."

She slams the door closed and turns to him with a smile, leaning over to whisper into his ear huskily. "Vamonos."

Many hours later she leans against the wall, the corridor dark and rubs the back of her head against the wallpaper. She throbs, not too unpleasantly but enough that it's noticeable. She hadn't let a man take her like that in so long she's forgotten how much she was missing, how good it made her feel to just take pleasure in her body and someoneelse's in that way. She felt empowered and she wanted to taste more.

But now she needs sleep. She moves quietly to her daughter's room and opens the door. It was very late and Nadia was fast asleep. He must have given her a bath and put her to bed. Nothing unusual about that but as she closes the door Maya looks around her sharply and strains to hear. The kitchen is empty, the light still on and she's about to switch it off when something catches her eye. The cake is gone. She lifts her eyes and freezes when she sees it's now on the wall. Someone must have thrown it and it's stuck. Frowning Maya prises it off and it slides down the wall in a streak of cream and honey.

"Maldición!...Gabriel?" She drops the ruined cake into the sink, feeling bad for throwing it away after Nadia had worked so hard on it. Wiping her hands on a cloth Maya thinks and bites nervously at her lip before she moves decisively out of the kitchen, flicking the light out behind her. Quietly she opens the front door and moves down the stairwell. When she rounds the corner she stops with a gasp as Gabriel stands there, looking up at her with eyes that scorch. He was furious but grinning strangely.

"Have fun!?"

"What? Gabriel, what happened to the cak-" She gasps again when he suddenly lunges at her with a grunt and grabs her arm, pulling her against him. "Gabriel!?"

"The cake? Who gives a shit about the cake?! You didn't! You were too busy fucking!" He spits out in disgust, furious with betrayal and Maya stares open mouthed, her eyes wild. She pulls her arm back but he won't let go. Instead he starts pushing her down the stairs before him, crushing her body up against his and speaking in an enraged whisper. "You think I wouldn't know?!"

"I don't know what you're talking about!" She barks and he flings her against his door and it bangs open against her weight. Wrathful Maya balls her hand into a fist and punches him in the face. She's so pumped full of adrenaline she doesn't feel the pain flashing through her fingers at the impact. He jerks back and cups a hand to his nose that starts to bleed a little. Maya, her teeth gritted and bared like an animal, stands still, her body seemingly locked into one place with anger but ready to spring if provoked.

He looks at the blood on his hand then up at her with a smirk and Maya feels her belly flipping over. This wasn't Gabriel anymore. "You know you fooled me, I thought you were actually going for the whole celibate thing. Like the nun you could have been. But you're just an unfaithful whore, probably would have been even then." He sneers and Maya's eyes widen in outrage but then just as quickly she laughs loudly. It's an obscene sound and it sends a lusty pulse deeply through him.

"Unfaithful? Are you serious? Dios, and here I was thinking that it had finally got through your thick skull. Me and you? Will never, ever happen again. I don't want to fuck you." She smirks and dismissively looks him up and down, "you were lousy anyway." She comes closer with a sick smile, her heart pounding at his red, fury filled face. She feels like a Maenad and wants to rip things apart in a frenzy, hurt him. Maya stands on tiptoe and whispers next to his ear, moans in a singsong lilt, "I let him put it anywhere..."

"Bitch!" He shouts and slams her up against the wall, presses himself against her and breaths into her face like a bellows. Maya cranes her head back, grim and hard.

"You can call me whatever you want, you can throw me around but it won't do anything. I can have sex with whoever I like and I don't give a shit about how it makes you feel Gabriel, you made sure of that when you betrayed me. You were the unfaithful one and you brought this all on yourself. So if you're going to rant and rave like a lunatic teenager? Do it away from our daughter you son of a bitch." She hisses and pushes him off her and he relents, standing with his hands on the wall and head down but then turns when she moves away.

"Maya, please..." he pleads in a deeply hurt voice but she ignores him and walks back up the stairs. Only once she's in her bedroom with the door locked does she breakdown, her body shaking uncontrollably as she cries with pent up tension and grief. She had wanted to hurt him but she was deluding herself if she didn't think it went both ways. Once she calms down she gets to her knees and turns on the reading lamp beside her bed. As she does she notices a small box on the cabinet and picks it up. It was a present, carefully wrapped and with a small card taped on it. She flips it open and reads even though she already knows who it's from.

To Maya

Happy Birthday. I hope you like these, it's taken me months to finish.

Gabriel.

Ripping the paper off she prises the lid open and sees a pair of earrings sitting in soft wool. With hesitant fingers she lift one up and peers at it. Dangling from a small hoop was tiny, intricate wheels and cogs attached to fine silver chains. Bigger wheels have a bright blue stones, like electric turquoise, placed in the middle and as she runs her thumb over it she releases it's from the Dominican. Larimar. She places the earring back and pushes the lid on and grips the small box in her hand. After a minute she stands, goes to her window and with dead eyes throws the gift out and draws the curtains behind her.

The next morning he finds the present he had made her lying in the grass and he picks it up with a miserably crushed expression.
