Drabble: Gwen, Dashing Wallflower
Rating: PG
Pairing/Character: Arthur/Gwen
Fandom: Merlin
Word Count: 446
Note: For crayford. I think this is when they're a bit younger, before Merlin. Crackish. Drunk Arthur ahead and a "Gweny" Gwen.

"Guin-a-veer?"

"M-my Lord?"

Gwen looks up at his smiling face, a cup of wine sloshing around in his hand as he tries not to stagger and fails. It was a knighting party and the prince had spotted her alone and started shouting - slurring - her name and walked over.

"Why aren't you having fun?"

"I uh, I am my lord."

"Really?" He ducks his head around her back and Gwen looks behind her, almost stumbling against him. He stares at her knowingly. "All the other ladies have dansh - danced but not you. "

Face flushing with heat she looks down and starts gingerly moving her feet. "I've been standing for hours Sire, I don't think I could even if I wanted to."

"Well then you mush sit." And he does just that. Slumping down on a bench he grabs her arm and brings her down with him. Gwen sits with her back ramrod straight, eyes staring fixedly ahead before scanning the crowded room to see if anyone is watching. But they all seem to preoccupied with drinking and talking, Uther long unconscious. Arthur smiles at the side of her head for far too long and Gwen squirms.

"Sire?"

"Yesssh?"

"Maybe I should ask one of the Knights to join you? They might be more fitting company."

He pouts which is at once mind skewing and adorable. "I see, you don't want to talk to me. You never do."

Gwen's mouth opens in shock and she staggers over her words. "No, no, that's not true! I eh, I just didn't think we would have anything of interest to talk about."

"Now you're calling me boring? Good god." He narrows his eyes at her, mock wounded, and she feels like she's about to combust into cinders of embarrassment. She seals her lips tightly and looks away with a head shake. He grins at her and drains the last of the wine and places it on the table.

"Cheer up Guinevere, I'm just teasing."

"I wish you wouldn't...Eh, I mean, you can if you want, maybe, possibly. You won't remember in the morning anyway so if you - ugh. Oh look, Morgana is calling me." She jumps to her feet and he looks blearily in the somewhat correct direction of the Lady who's back is to them and frowns.

"No she's not."

Gwen nods vigorously. "Oh she was Sire, yes, yes. So I better not keep her waiting. Goodnight." She curtsies and he lifts his browse as the handmaiden quickly dashes to the other side of the room like her tail was on fire.

"Night then..." He stares where she was seated beside him and, feeling a bit lonely, decides to lie down there.
