This is my favourite picture. It shows Nadia as a new born, in my arms. He's beside me and we smile into the camera. I'm in my hospital gown, hair curled with sweat. I look sleepy, younger and a completely different person. I look so happy and at ease, we both do. I compare it to other pictures of us and the difference is glaring. I grimace, I pout, I glare. So many of me looking away, cheek turned, hand up. Nadia caught in the middle.
In those we are separated but in this we are together. A young family. I can hardly remember it being taken, the labour a blur and over so quick, luckily. I remember the panic the most intensely. I was scared he would take her from me.
I do not show him this picture because I know he will use it against me. Or maybe he wouldn't, I don't know his mind. Neither does he.
I look at it and it makes my pain seem self inflicted. It's a precious, clean moment of joy caught and it betrays me.
