There’s grave dirt under my fingernails and it won’t come out.

My brother sings that lullaby to me under his breath for hours on end until it becomes just another hum within the insect buzz.

“Maya mi Maya, los milagros estan aqui!…Duermete Maya, estas en manos antiguas.”

There isn’t any old hands there to hold me and there are no miracle within me. I am full of poisonous filth.

Alejandro looks at me in fear but he’s not scared of me, only for me. But I know he should be. I try to pry the soil out with a splinter of wood but I just end up jabbing my skin, hands unable to keep still. Blood swells up and it looks black in the dark and I stare transfixed. There isn’t a scratch on me, I killed them first.

“Se me salvó de ellos…”

“¿Qué?”

“Nada,” I turn my face away, ashamed at what I had thought. I close my eyes as my twin starts to sing to me again.

As if I am a child and not a murderer.
