She fingers her cross with nervous movements and it flashes gold in the sun, drawing him to her.
“I can’t help thinking how things would be so different Gabriel.” They were parked across from a church as Alejandro filled up the car with gas and she has been staring up at it for long moments.
Sylar looks down from the building to regard her with a light frown. “What?”
“I was a novice in Venezuela. If my brother hadn’t found me I would be taking my vows now…” Maya draws her transfixed gaze away and turns her face to him and sees that his brows are drawn up with surprise. Maya chuckles and lets the cross slip out of her fingers with a sigh.
“You never told me that.” He stares at her intensely and she can see something shifting in his eyes, searing and excited. His mouth curls into a smile.
“Don’t be impressed Gabriel, I never took them but I was making a mockery of my time there.” She looks back at the stain-glass windows, her mouth down turning. “I have never lied so much in my life, never been so deceiving. I was only there because it offered what I needed, not because it was my calling.” Her eyes harden and she looks down.
“You went there because you thought it was the last option. Don’t beat yourself up for trying to help yourself.” He draws closer to her, brushing his hand down her arm and she smiles gently at the feel. “So you’re not going in I take it?”
Still smiling she shakes her head vigorously, hand reaching for the cross again. “No, I don’t feel right doing that.” Her thumb rubs repeatedly over the crucified saviour, her lip caught between her teeth. “Not like this.”
He frowns deeply at her and pulls her around to face him. “What’s happening in here,” he brushes his thumb over her eyelashes, making her blink, “has nothing to do with this.” He grazes his fingers down her throat to lay against the cross and pulls her fingers away from it and laces them through his, all the while keeping his penetrative gaze on her. “Why else are you going to a scientist for salvation?”
Maya doesn’t answer and she doesn’t look back at the church as he leads her away.
