Say hello to the future DeepThoughtII:
Case: A snazzy black aluminum Skyhawk from PCmods.
Source: Hopefully, a 300W Sparkle Power will be enough. I haven't checked the wattage yet.
Motherboard: ASUS A7V333, having 1 AGP and 5 PCI slots, maximum of 3GB DDR memory, and supposedly some seriously hardcore bus speed.
Processor: AMD XP 2100+ running at 1.67 GHz.
Graphics: GeForce 3 Ti500.
RAM: 512 MB DDR to start.
HDD: Maxtor 80 GB 7200 RPM, ultra ATA 133.
FDD: Cheap-ass Samsung.
CD: Toshiba CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM combo.
Sound: Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy.
Modem: Cheap-ass 3Com.
Network: Any 10/100 Ethernet card.
Input devices: Mitsuko has a black mouse, keyboard, and speaker package that looks nice.
OS: Windows XP
Other: Haven't really decided what sort of fans or IDE cables to get. I suppose the latter isn't much of a concern, but the former might be. I imagine the GeForce GPU needs its own cooling fan, but I'm not sure.
My major concern is that the Athlon XP's are nearing the end of the line, and I'd like to have a board compatible with new AMD processors for at least another year or two after I build it. It might be a good idea to wait a while for the next generation of CPUs.
Would it be better to build a Pentium 4 machine?
Then again, I don't want to upgrade DeepThought with a new 100 ATA HDD if I know I won't be able to use it in my next computer.
Decisions, decisions.
Anyway, if you know more about computers than me (and you probably do), please comment if any part of this doesn't make sense or is blindingly stupid. Thanks.
