Oh, Dr Baltay wasn't patronizing: he was suiting his talk for his audience (as he thought). I'd have thought that a bunch of geeks would prefer a deeper talk, but it turns out that some of the Q&A were on topics like whether horoscopes would be changed now that Pluto's no longer a planet. (I wish I were kidding.) No, my remark was for the geeks' benefit, not the professor's.
And I'd almost forgotten that incident! One of the few times anyone managed to shut Martin up, as I recall. ((preens))
Sadly, he spent most of the answer explaining to the audience exactly what the cosmological constant was. I got the impression that most theorists are simply equating dark energy with the constant, or perhaps using it as the mechanism. Notwithstanding that the cosmological constant is, well, a constant in the equation -- unchanging -- while the values of dark energy still need to be measured.
