Nov 28, 2008 06:51

O.k the tilte's a little lame but you kinda get it right? Right? Awww who I', kidding anyway boys and girls lets talk about paper mache pulp. In case your wondering paper mache can be in two forms Pupl & Strip. In the last turorial we talked about the strip method now lets talk a little about the pulp form.

I will warn you this is a lot of work and it can be a less work either way I'm gonna show you both ways so that it can suit your styles and what comes easy for you. Now if you are familiar with with a product called "Paperclay" then you know that stuff rules. It's paper mache pulp that drys fast and easy hoever it can crack so make sure you apply more to the cracks and once dry sand it down. I love "Paperclay" but it's friging exspensive if you need more than one pack. One pack alone cost $5.00 and that adds up if your making a huge ass prop. If you need one pack then that is fine but for those of you who are on a budget like me then that can be a "Propblem". Hehehe I think I made a funny....anyway yeah for those of you who want to save money and the environment then this tutorial is for you. So lets get started. First lets start with the quikest way of making pulp and I mean quick cuz in reality making pupl takes at lest 3 days to make or less. Don;t let that sarce you trust me it's worth the wait and with the first technique I'm gonna show you it wil take 1 day.

Supplies:

Egg Cartens or those drink holders you get at fast food restuarants

1 pot of boling water

plastic container or bucket

1 Mixer or blender ( I used a hand held one)

1 Bottle of elmers glue

1 teaspoon of bleach

1 Strainer

Optional ingredints:

Wall paper paste (Flour & wheat past)

Linseed oil

O.k lets get started:

Gather your cartons and tear them into tiney 1 inch squares.

In case your wondering I got my catons from the costodial closet at my job. These were actually trays that were used to store soap so I snagged them out of the trash. Waste not want not.

Place you pieces into the bucket. I used a 1 gallon icecream bucket.

O.k boil your water and pour it into the container. Make sure to fillit up halfway. Take a spoon and submerge the pieces until they are entirely wet. Add more if you need to.

Let it soak overnight. In the morning I checked on the peices and they were really soft. That means it"s ready. So go get your mixer ready.

I used a hand mixer because it was easy to work with and less messy.

Mix!!!

And mix untill you get a pulpy texture.

Grab a bowl folks we"er having cold moldy oatmeal hmmm hmmmm.

Take small amout of the mixture and press it into your stainer. If you have cheescloth then you can palce it into the cloth a little at a time and squeezed out the excess water.

Squeezing helps too.

Until you have all of it drained. It will be a bit cold and dry like but it will be ready for mixing in your other ingrediants that will make it into the paperclay likeform.

I went ahead and put the paperpulp into a differnt bowl so that you can get a better vsion of how I'm gonna mix it.

I added homemade wheat paste to them pulp. I then added hald a bottle of glue and 1 teaspoon of Linseed oil.

Here is a pic of me mixing the ingresiants together.

Here is another pic of it fully mixed.

And there you have it boys and girls homemade "Paperclay" Yay. Now take in mind that it is gonna have a medicated smell becuase of the linseed oil but it goes away later on once you are done using it.

Now lets do the Newsprint version. Yes you can use newpaper to do this as well.

Supplies:

1 Stack of newspaper ton in small 1 inch pieces

1 large pot half way filled with boling water

1 table spoon of bleach

1 stainer

b Start tearing

This is how it si gonna look like once it is bolied.

Here"s a closer look.

Stain the pulp into the stainer being carefull that it is hot.

Run cold water over it until the mixture is slighly cool.

You can press out the water of you can put it back in to the pot either way you want to have a little water left into the pot so that you can mix it easily.

You can omit this step and mix the mixture after you boil it and then strain it either way is fine but mixing it while it is in the hot water is a better choice.

Mix it just like the previous tuorial and you'll have papercaly in no time. By the way this too was a quick method. You can also take the paper peices and put theminto a bucket and let pour hot water over the and let them soak overnight. Then boil it for 30 minutes or more and them mix strain and add your ingredients.

So that concludes part 2 part 3 will cover making your own paste and how to give your paper mache a profesonal finish.
