Also, even if this film is monumentally awful (and I hope it isn't, but I am wary of childhood fiction loves being turned into films, look what they did to The Dark is Rising!) I'm definitely going to be looking for some deep and poignant Marcus/Esca fics. Just saying ;)

Oh dear, oh dear, the historical detail appears to be slightly fanciful already so I certainly won't be hoping too hard. I grew up within a stone's throw of the Antonine wall which was allegedly the northernmost point the Romans reached in Scotland and it's a good bit short of the Highlands, that's for sure!

On the other hand Roman fic sounds very interesting and to hell with the finer detail!

It's based on a children's book (of dubious historical accuracy!!) but great in terms of being a book about adventure and friendship and recognising the value in different cultures etc. We shall see what the film manages to relate, but it will not be histoically accurate, even if it is a great film. Since the book was written, for example, it's been determined that the premise (9th legion disappeared somewhere beyond Hadrian's Wall) was in fact incorrect. But that doesn't prevent it being a damn fine novel. Here's hoping they can capture even a tiny bit of that in film! I saw a reference to the fact that the girl in the book has been left out of the film (the director referred to her character as 'the only legitimate heterosexual love interest' or something similar) and that the Marcus/Esca master and slave relationship is going to be 'redefined as less deferential and more edgy'.

Now that does sound very interesting, especially to those of us with certain slashy interests! I shall definitely watch out for it.

(Good to see someone using a lovely Vigorli icon too!)

:) I don't want to get my hopes up, but I did love these characters once upon a time and could definitely see how it would work as a more romantic pairing (and it seems possible that the director thinks so too ... interesting! I guess I missed that when I was 8 years old!)

Always good to have a shiny Viggorli icon. Makes me feel a bit nostalgic really!
