Hahahaha, welcome to this fandom! I have, uh, at least four stories going because I CANNOT FOCUS, and my brain wants to start two more.

(Ooooh, Guern story.)

(I have a theory that the fort in the movie is not Isca Dumnoniorum, but Habitancum, just north of Hadrian's Wall, where the actual Fourth Cohort of Gauls was probably stationed at that point--movie!Marcus's cohort does not seem to be attached to a legion, and the "200 leagues" (which I assumed to be Roman leagues, else they'd have to be well into Scotland) is pretty close to the distance between Habitancum and Calleva, but much further than the distance between Isca Dumnoniorum and Calleva. But I suspect that it even matches that closely is an accident.)

Ugh, I was trying to just do one and focus on getting that finished. But clearly it isn't going to happen!

I was sad at the lack of Guern in the movie, although he looked fantastic. I feel a need to rectify that.

(Innnnteresting. The 'nobody goes north of the wall and survives' stuff in the movie was annoying, and I'm sorry that they didn't have the abandoned forts of the book, which I find so evocative. And the movie says something generic about south of the wall for the location of Marcus's posting, rather than saying specifically where. I hadn't considered this as an option. Oh dear, more ideas!)

I wasn't really happy with what they did with Guern, although a lot of that is just that as much as I enjoyed the role reversal goodness in the Seal People village, the entire second half strained my sense of credulity to snapping, and I hated the last stand of the Ninth.

(Oh, god, my eyes almost ROLLED OUT OF MY HEAD at the "Romans can't survive up there!". Yeah, I'm going to ignore "south of the wall" and continue treating it as Habitancum, or at least somewhere only slightly south of the wall for movieverse purposes.))

The whole last stand of the Ninth makes sense only if you are thinking of a film narrative arc - without it they had a big fight in the first ten minutes then no climatic scene. But even understanding why they put it in I found it very stupid. I like Guern's decision in the book, I like that he's got more complexity, and I like that they don't know within two seconds of meeting him that he used to be a legionary ( ... )

YAY I am still working on that. I'm just temporarily distracted by the shiny new men.

Also THAT WOULD BE AWESOME. I would love to be in a fandom with you again. I promise that it is ridiculous, but often in the best of ways.
