It's time for me to schedule my Penn State classes, and I don't know what to do for a foreign language. Italiano or francais? I'm stuck between two vaguely appealing masses of European culture. mockingbird and gatsby are two of my favourite books.
i started anna karenina a couple years ago but did so in an unmotivated half-hearted way and thus didn't get very far into it.

suggestions?

I actually think learning Italian would be more beneficial to you. When I was in France, learning English seemed to be really difficult. Everyone speaks English there and they're so uppity about their language that they refuse to speak French to you unless you do the accent perfectly.

I'm sure in Italy they're a lot nicer about speaking in Italian to you, even if your accent sucks. Also, for some reason, I just think that not as many people in Italy speak English as fluently.

So, I think Italian is more useful. You can also understand/communicate with Spanish speaking people.

A nation of buttsniffers, though I don't want to stereotype...but they are. I agree with Mary on both counts, that Italian is better than French and Mandarin better than Italian, as in more useful...a whole hell of a lot harder, but definitely the future important language, already the number 2 probably ( ... )
