So. Here's the thing.

I'll be honest. This past week or so has been remarkably frustrating. As I said before, I had been set on UCSB for a while - until I realized that Harvard had a lot to offer. Or, more accurately, Boston had a lot to offer. So I did what I often do about decisions: meander while talking about them. And every time I said "I'm going to Harvard," ( Read more... )

I'm confident that you'll be happy, and I'm even more certain that you'll do great work. In the end, life is chaotic enough that the reasons we make decisions tend to have little to do with the things that end up mattering the most -- but that's because we always have to decide on things (collges, careers, dinner entrees) before we really know much about them. Too bad life isn't an ice cream store.

Congratulations! We'll miss you.

Regardless of whether or not the physics aligns in polarity with your decision, I firmly believe you made the decision years ago; that it was built in to Brian, and because of this the problem was framed very correctly before.

Regarding whether or not the physics aligns in polarity with your decision, perhaps you think UCSB has more kinetic energy? Assuming you are right: add in the potential energy. Harvard has more energy overall. You have problems with the distribution at Harvard? Change it your goddamn self.

Finally, how are exactly you going to become a great theoretical squash player if you don't go to the place with theoretically the most players of squash?

I am confident you will be happy and do great work. And congratulations for having (or creating) hard decisions with only positive and more positive as possible outcomes. Most decision trees aren't as lucky as to have leaves solely of the beautiful sort. I am excited for the physics the world will gain!
