The opening ceremonies were spectacular. The scale of it was actually laughable, in a hysterical "OMG look at the people!" way. It was beautiful, and full of symbolism, and also kind of empty. It's the peacock display of someone who's had an inferiority complex for so long that it has brewed a palpable hunger to show the world some jumped up trick

heh, i enjoyed this rant, mostly because there have been several things that have left me with vaguely disquieting feelings about the way China has handled hosting, but i never would have phrased it the way you have, so that's rather enlightening, in a way.

the most the media boasts about how omfgamazing the opening ceremony was, and the more they boast about how much it cost, the more i think, oh shit, every single man, woman, and child in china is paying for that, through the nose. ~_~ le sighs.
