Bad recordings, compression headaches

Tonight I finally went back to listen to the L'Arc albums that I ripped to lossless (a long time ago here) and had some thoughts (rants):

First, wiki on Loudness war for some background ( Read more... )

i wasn't aware of the technical issues behind it, though that wiki article is really interesting. i wonder when they'll realize that the only way to stand out now is be QUIETER and have better sound? =p but i am intrigued, because even without being aware, i could hear how out of whack the balance was, to the point where the bass gets lost a lot, and the drums are way too strong. as far as yukki's articulation on drums... well, you already know my opinion. ^_~

it's really a pity, though. i guess in a way, it's just as good for the musicians, too, because it means you kinda HAVE to see them live to REALLY hear the songs, but. *sighs* you'd think they'd WANT their audience to hear the music they produced, and not just... loudness. =p

Yeah, the recording industry is like the publishing: slow to catch on to anything but ways to make money. I'm not sure being at a concert helps the volume problem, since every concert I've been to have felt like being body-slammed by walls of sound, to the point where I could not hear the singer >=O

The post was actually sparked off by how bad New World sounds (it's not just the cymbals it's how LOUD they were mixed). But actually L'Arc stuff is ok...compared to Hyde's Faith. It sounds like every instrument was dialed all the way up *cringe*. If it was done on purpose, well that's even worse!
