Cranky Librarian/Grammar Geek Post...

If you don't know the difference between "illicit" and "elicit", you really shouldn't be doing research on libraries. Really, really, you shouldn't.

And the mental images of that one are going to stay with me for a while...

One will never elicit an illicit proposal from a cute librarian if one does not understand the meaning of the words. :)

Rats! You beat me to it.

Conan the Librarian would go all Dewey Decimal on the ass of anyone trying to elicit an illict proposal in a library. Do not trifle with Librarians, for they have access to all knowledge and are not afraid to use it!

Are you kidding, he would be the one making the proposal... just so long as they were quiet about it...

Quiet is essential. No matter what happens in a library -- even the Zombocalypse -- the quiet must be maintained!

Years ago, a young couple decided to get amorous in the top floor of the stacks at Lehigh during the ceiling refurbishment project. About half way through their illicit rendezvous the frosted glass windows over them opened, and a workman stuck his head in. He asked them to relocate as he was working on the windows and really did not need the distractions.

His laughter at their retreat could be heard throughout the library

My issue has also been discrete and discreet.

I am still sometimes unsure.

While I just thought this up, the obvious mnemonic is that the two ee's that are together had better be discreet about it, while discrete's two e's are discrete.

THAT is an awfully clever mnemonic! Nice job!

Song lyrics about sex in the campus library were standard fare in the bad songs written at UVM during my time there, but maybe that's just because it was so empty on Saturday nights!

Oh, I like that one.

And the grammar_nazis would probably empathize about the illicit elicitation.

My camp's librarian quote for Pennsic 37, from fallenlibrarian: "I can't stop 'ssssh!-ing.' I'm a librarian!"
