Sociologically speaking, Tumblr is a truly fascinating place. :)

Not quite sure whether to laugh or cry. This is sort of why I never really got to grips with Tumblr. It also explains a lot of the s**t we get on AO3. You made my evening - thank you - off to copy/paste some of the quotes (and yes, I appreciate that they're amalgamated) to entertain my AO3 colleagues in our locked staff chatroom. It all makes FB look positively tame, though even there I have noticed some total idiots!

You're welcome, and it's okay to pass them a link to the whole post, whichever one. XD

You know, I'm actually terrified about the mentality of the generation Tumblr is going to raise up, and yes, I'm aware it sounds like a grumbling of a grumpy granny. People wail about all the evil porn in the evil Internet, but porn is Tumblr's smallest problem. Kids for whom Tumblr is their first and currently only social network are going to get really weird ideas about social interactions, friendship and such. All this 'follow for follow', and 'pls like this post if you don't hate me', and so on... My post was supposed to be a light satire, so I've collected rather laughable than really disturbing things here, but still...

Oh, and when we're at AO3, you might like this. :)

I have a Tumblr but I have never figured the place out, how it works, etc. I've tried! Then I realize I have spent so much time and gotten nowhere, and I give up.

Reading about Tumblr is so much more entertaining! Sometimes scary. Tumblr really seems to be a magnet for insanity, and I don't mean the good kind.

Anyway, this post was fun. Thank you! And I am grateful you let me reply even though I am white and cis and straight. Bwahahah.

More than magnet, I'd say. It's actually its breeding ground. Tumblr has its good corners and nice people, of course, but they are drowned by the loud and crazy that wind up each other... And I don't (only) mean SJW, but the whole culture of emotional blackmail, drama queening, murderous competition for popularity and pushing responsibilities on others even in matters I'd never think there's some responsibility to speak of in the first place, like finding entertainment for self.

even though I am white and cis and straight.
*le gasp* Be careful with putting such sensitive data about yourself in the open! :)

See, this is how you make me see the funny side of things that otherwise make me want to pull my hair out by the roots!

Ah, yes, tumblr is a mysterious place of really weird netiquette. To be honest, I still didn't figure out lik 87% of those unwritten rules and accepted my status as an old person who doesn't get the kids these days. But to be fair, every platform/site ever used had its own rules that were never/rarely written down? I remember the same shit from old forums and LJ. Fanfiction.net had different set of those rules than AO3. And so on and so on. So while I don't pretend to understand tumblr and just do as I please there usually, I remember how on some forums comments were only accepted if they were more than one line. How people left "read&review" on texts on fanfiction.net to let the readers know that reviews and constructive criticism is welcome. And now on AO3 if you don't like something you're generally not supposed to say anyting. I remember when LJ was busy and people got unfriended because they didn't do LJ-cuts. Ha! Just a few weeks ago I got angry messages from a person, because I unfriended them on LJ and did so in a wrong way. ( ( ... )

Actually I think the kids can't really figure it out themselves, but each and all of them are dead sure they did, and everyone else is just awful for not keeping these rules. Thing is, comparison of what I keep seeing indicates that 87% Tumblr rules isn't universally agreed on at all! Some are miffed by liking their private posts and throw fits when someone dares to reblog their private rants, and at the same time others cry "Why no one likes my private posts! You don't care about me at all!", to give only one example of contradiction. But none of them ever seem to realize that their idea of netiquette might be not obvious for others.

And now on AO3 if you don't like something you're generally not supposed to say anyting. On LJ this "say nice or nothing" is maybe more popular now than before, too, though here it's unwritten, and I think if you break it, it won't be always meet with this ( ... )

I remember when LJ was busy and people got unfriended because they didn't do LJ-cuts.I saw on Tumblr someone ranting on people not using cuts in long posts. Well, they are useful on LJ, but I don't use them on Tumblr, because they make reblogged post useless. If you try to unroll it, it's just link that takes you to the original post... that may be already deleted, thank you very much. But I certainly wouldn't unfriend anyone over it, that's stupid. :) Then again, friending on LJ is by far not the same as following on Tumblr. On Tumblr I unfollow blogs for such reasons like posting dozens times daily and clogging my dash. Speaking of what, after posting this entry I learned what "dead dash" actually means for some... Apparently it's when "after an hour there is only forty new posts!". For some time I've been having a sneaking suspicion that plenty people on Tumblr don't care about keeping up with what their friends post, unlike on LJ, and that quote confirmed that they just want constant flow of entertainment from blogs they forget ( ... )

Hahaha, yeah, okay, I agree, plenty of those rules are slippery at best and different for various bloggers. (The reblogging of personal posts is a great example, though personally I found the 'don't reblog, just like' rule used most often and that's what I usually do. Especially if it's something more personal/senstive than just random life update.)

I keep seeing posts "Don't tell anything contradicting in notes; make your own post instead," and "Don't use tags for the [given ship, or whatever], if you say anything less than rainbow-gushing on it; these tags are only for positive things."See, this is one of tumblr rules that I actually agree with and try to honor. I'm not saying when the discussion is going on, but people really tend to walk all over someone else's post or invade the tags with their hatred and that's just ugh, so annoying ( ... )

Now I know I have been very wise to stay away from Tumblr! Although it might be worth a look for the potential laughs that can be had!

Thanks for posting:D
