TvTropes Meme

Jun 11, 2018 20:33

Look, I did a meme and it didn’t even take half a year a month! Also, I think it should be obvious you should take this title for a warning. I’m not accepting any suits for whatever much of your lives you’re gonna lose entering this. :>

Taken from ikel89, who wrote: offer me a trope (freeform, or tvtropes terminology -- your call), and i'll rank it on a scale of no/rather not/dunno/i guess/ sure/yes/fuck yes/oh god you don't even know, and possibly sprout a mini-rant along with it. in response, you're getting the same number of tropes from me, which you can either take as a prompt to do the same thing, or ignore altogether.
...and offered me:
# soulmates
# crossovers, or specifically, intercontinuity ones
# reset button
# romance-inducing smudge

Ooookay, for starters I’m going to tweak with the rules, because of course I am.
First, I’m not taking more prompts myself (not like it wasn’t fun, but I need to have some life offline, so y’know, gotta be strong and resist), but I’ll gleefully gladly offer some for you, just tell me if you want them. :)
And second, I’m not really sure this scale works for me, but if I come up with my own, I’m not sure if I’d keep to it either, so how about no scale? Feel free to make yours, of course.

So. Ahem.

# soulmates
No, thanks. Enough to nope me out of a fic that otherwise looks promising. I’m not sure why, though. First instinctive reply is: because it’s silly and unrealistic, but after rethinking I realize it’s not this. Unrealistic, so what, just another fantasy trope, big deal. It’s not like I got anything against fantasy tropes per se, as long as one is aware of them being that, a fantasy. So, while further investigation may reveal more reasons for my ‘nope’, it seems like my main one is that soulmates fics by their nature tend to be tight tied to AU plot scheme, specifically the sort where the canon basically goes out the window and a whole new story is arranged in its place - the almost-entirely-different-characters come from different place and meet in a different way in different circumstances... All in all, this results in the outcome that makes most of AUs not my cup of tea: too much and too many ‘different’s. I’d lie saying I’ve never read and enjoyed any such AU, but generally I prefer ficwriters taking the canon thing and going with this in some non-canon direction, instead of ficwriters trying to write the whole thing anew. At this point it’s just not enough the thing to me, but rather a new original-ish thing.
That’s funny btw, out there people turn up their noses at fanfiction literature as a whole, saying it’s worthless for not being original, while here I reject fics for being too much original and thus not enough fic-feeling to me.

# crossovers, or specifically intercontinuity ones
Yay, yes! In general, I love anything that puts characters out of their water and makes them deal with surprising stuff, learn new things, solve new problems etc. Crossovers do it fine, and extreme crossovers do it finer, I don’t mind even that extreme ones usually equal crack. They work also as a way to have one of my most favoritest tropes ever: outsider POV, and in crossover it's two-way at that! A caveat though: fusions aren’t my thing. I’m interested in a meeting/clash of worlds (characters), not in remaking a plot I already know in new decorations.

# reset button
Meh, feels deus-ex-machina-ish - half cheating, half lazy writing. However, some subtypes are actually good, like ”Groundhog Day” Loop or Three Wishes. I think it’s because those are actual ideas that build the whole story (and the latter even feels satisfyingly smart, when well done, like a good puzzle), and you can see they were there from the beginning, instead of thrown in as a half assed trick to finish a story the author didn’t know how to finish.

# romance-inducing smudge
Shrug, I guess? No strong feelings about it. A trope that is there, next to millions of others, but doesn’t do much to me, as millions of others. I’m not much into romance as a genre, so I’m not really tuned to romantic tropes - noticing, categorizing etc. - as real fan would be, I suppose. Now, if we talk categories of mythical creatures, tho... XD

There. So, anyone wants a meme starter? :)
