Menagerie / Menażeria #4

Oct 05, 2014 21:33

How about a handful of, uh, pretty much everything? A regular, non-themed Menagerie this time. Rules as usual: the description’s language tells you the language of the content under the link.

Garść, no, wszystkiego tym razem. Zwyczajne, nie-tematyczne wydanie Menażerii. Zasady jak zwykle: język opisu odpowiada językowi treści pod linkiem.

The SJ thing, uhhh, I dunno. I've been weirded out lately to come across several people describing language-learning as 'cultural appropriation.'

...

...

*boggles* I mean, I think it was a joke. I think... Sometimes I need people to hold up a sign saying 'Just Kidding!' to be sure.

I'm not sure about the PoC thing, I mean it's useful shorthand for certain discussions. It would terribly hinder and obstruct my frothing furious criticisms of Doctor Who and Stephen Moffat, if I had to list all the ethnic groups he's personally insulted with his depiction of Gallifrey and TimeLords.

That's terribly clever with the chocolate. It would never last long enough for me to work my way through the demo if I was filming it. "Where has the missing piece gone? THE EVIDENCE HAS BEEN DESTROYED!"

Heh, here's an article with some, ahem, really peculiar examples collected, and I must say my favourite is the one where someone says "you should stop speaking spanish ... because you look white". Indeed, I can hardly believe they aren't some, I don't know, jokes? parodies? trollings? Then again, maybe they aren't... Every time you think you've seen everything, the Internet proves you wrong. >.<

Maybe we need a gif. 'Kidding. You're doing it wrong.' When you don't know it's supposed to be a joke, it means the joke is failed, right? :)

Personally I agree with the linked author that making two groups - white and PoC - is still kinda racist, cause it's still making a division where should not be any. It's still 'white and those others'. Not to mention the name itself is a bit funny... I mean, if non-white is ( ... )

That article about the political 'warriors' really hit home - we've been dealing with some of them 'dogpiling' on AO3.

I always assumed the eagles didn't go to the lonley mountain because it was a long way with no hills in between where they could safely land, feed, rest, etc. Eagles are mountain birds and don't often fly over plains. I'm intrigued to find that they had exams instead...

And I love that gif!!!

Yeah, and it takes courage to tell that the king is naked. When 'racist', 'homophobe', 'misogynist' and such are insults now - and justifiably - and when anti-discrimination activist are the nowadays 'good guys', also justifiably, pointing that some of them tilt at windmills is a slippery ground. Probably not the most fortunate term, though, cause the windmills are quite real, and actually I believe the warriors really have good intentions, but it's like with any group, ideology, whatever, that was on 'good side' in the past. Like Christians, or communists, or anti-communists, depending on the side of the pond. When it goes massive, soon you can expect witch hunt, cause one proves own holiness easiest by pointing at unholy enemies...

Oh, I find it totally plausible. Calling at such unholy hour, really... *g*

And I love that gif!!!

I get the impression - from LJ, AO3 and other forums, that the over-zealous warriors tend to be American. They have a more recent history with issues like colour and slavery etc. and are much more inclined to worry about words rather than actions. And of course it's the country where a politician was forced to resign for using the word 'niggardly' which has absolutely no connection with any similar words... In UK we get collectively annoyed with politicians who use seriously racist language, but we make sure of our facts first ( ... )

Yes, a lot of Americans tend to think the all world is just like USA, only abroad and maybe with a few French words. Even if they aren't majority, then certainly they are loud. I heard about 'warriors' being outraged that Scandinavian, Eastern European or Russian films, all set in countries of their origin, have only white cast, and unable to believe that films in question were supposed to be just realistic. Then again, maybe it's just another Internet rumour, "I know someone who know someone who read somewhere..." However, it all becomes really tangled when American point of view is imported on other ground without minding the local context. Most of Polish words for different ethnicities/races were considered neutral, and if someone wanted to tell it in derisive way, there was and still is a choice of truly ugly words, not to mention that Polish ( ... )
